Hillary Clinton: 'Viewership Of Al Jazeera Is Going Up In The United States Because It's Real News'

As a Hillary supporter I am bias. I agree with her here 100%.She speaks the truth.I'm sure this will send Freepers and Tea Party nuts off the deep end but it needed to be said!

'Al Jazeera has been the leader in literally changing people's minds and attitudes. And like it or hate it, it is really effective.'

In fact viewership of al Jazeera is going up in the United States because it's real news. You may not agree with it, but you feel like you're getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials and, you know, arguments between talking heads and the kind of stuff that we do on our news which, you know, is not particularly informative to us, let alone foreigners.'

Technically, she's talking about Al Jazeera English, which is a totally different channel to the Arabic language channel Al Jazeera, but it's still a tectonic shift in attitude compared to the last administration who called them 'terrorist TV', murdered Al Jazeera reporters and wanted to literally wipe them off them map.

Something from the LA Times article last month titled: 'U.S. mends frosty relations with Al Jazeera' could explain this rapprochement.

Today there is a 'healthy tension' with Al Jazeera, said Shell Smith, who served for two decades as a foreign service officer in the Middle East and Asia, and has seen how Al Jazeera and other networks have helped break state media monopolies.

Tony Berman, Al Jazeera's chief strategic advisor for the Americas, said that multiple meetings with U.S. officials have smoothed the relationship. Clinton had a frank, one hour discussion with Al Jazeera's top executives during a visit to Qatar a year ago that seemed to clear the air, Berman said.

'The cold war that existed between the Bush administration and Al Jazeera has totally ended,' Berman said. "Now it's a professional relationship between an aggressive government and an aggressive news organization.'

Created in 1996 by the Qatari government, Al Jazeera 'is becoming a global media power,' said a November report by the State Department's inspector general.

I've never watched Al Jazeera, but it would almost have to be better than what the cable news networks provide. There is precious little journalism on the air right now, even putting aside the sham that is Fox. It's absurd that CNN and MSNBC waste time with viewer tweets and e-mails, or showing us newspaper headlines.

I was in the Caribbean last week and our resort had Al Jazeera English. I got more news -- i.e. actual current events instead of people arguing and shouting about the same old crap or celebrity interviews -- watching it for 10 minutes than I would get watching CNN all day and Fox News for a week.

It wasn't anti-America in the least. It just wasn't from a U.S. point of view, much like watching BBC News. Of course, I guess to some, presenting stories that don't always present the United States as the hero is enough to be considered anti-American.

CNN International, when I am not in the States do I usually have this channel next to the BBC as my go-to news channel, is pretty tolerable and frankly should be what is playing in the afternoon on CNN instead of 'vote for the story' and 'stupid animal tricks' videos.

You can stream Al-Jazeera online live at any time. I found their news coverage refreshing looking at plenty of angles of the Middle East conflicts. They are very aware of their image and sometimes cover international film festivals and do entertainment stories, in the most high brow way possible, and they also got David Frost a show a while back when AJE channel came to form. Not anti-American in the least. AJE is just not obsessed with how the West figures in any of their news stories which even the BBC falls into.

The only places that I know where AJE is available is in Washington DC and Vermont (found out they also have some Ohio cities and Houston, Texas). The stream online is pretty solid.

I watch local news for the first 10 minutes and the weather. I rarely watch the national news anymore. I turn to PBS News Hour, Duetche Welle TV (DW-TV)and BBC.

I watched AJE online during the Egypt uprisings, and found it pretty reasonable and informative. It was more news than opinion.
