Glad to hear that Affleck is not bad.
He was terrible in Shakespeare in Love.
I would like to see this film about Hollywood in the 50s.

I can't wait to see it. I'm going to try to see it on Sunday, it looks great.

Posted: 9/8/06 at 5:15pmJudging from the reviews I've read, I'm predicting Oscar nods for Affleck and Lane. The word 'tour de force' was used for both, numerous times.

I'm seeing this Sunday...soooo looking forward to it. I love Adrien Brody.
I'm not a big Affleck fan, but I must remind myself that I loved "Good Will Hunting".

Intend to see it no matter what as it is a fascinating story

I pretty much agree with Anakela. Bob Hoskins was really excellent as well, as was a quietly menacing Joe Spano.
I was more engaged with the Affleck/Reeves scenes than I was the Adrien Brody ones.
I think too much time was spent on the PI's issues and extra case he was working on.

Lets give Ben some credit - he's been great in his Kevin Smith movies - Chasing Amy, Dogma, - O.K., I'll admit I didn't see Jersey Girl. Should we blame him for taking roles in big budget crapfests like Armageddon and Pearl Harbor?
Ben seems like a really nice guy. He's been doing the talk shows, and you should see how his face lights up whn he talks about his wife and the baby - they clearly mean much more to him than being a movie star.
I'm glad he's getting good notices for this new film.

I think Ben is a great actor that gets too much flack due to the "Bennifer" relationship. And does anyone else think that Ben and Jennifer Garner are such a cute couple?

I can't say that I've liked Affleck's work in the past. With the exception of Good Will Hunting, none of his performances have been convincing to me.
However, I have always liked him as a person. And, if he finally gets respect in Hollywood (again), then I'll be very happy for him.

Saw it today & it was excellent. Overheard someone say Affleck was miscast. Guess that is why he just won an award @ the Venice Film festival. This will probably get an Oscar nod for this. Best performance of his career
Reeves biographer raves about it. The scenes recreating Superman were great. They show how the scene of him flying out of an alley with newspapers blowing around in his trail was done.
You really had to feel sorry for reeves & you leave not knowing if he did kill himself or if he was murdered

No way excellent in my opinion.
Plot wise it was interesting in parts, however overall the film just doesn't hold together. It goes no where, and I'm sorry to say is ultimately unsatisfying. It wants to be a CHINATOWN or LA CONFIDENTIAL, but alas, no where near.
Good performances all around though: Afleck, Lane, Brody, Hoskins, all terrific.
Which leads me to the whole experience of going to a an actual film theatre today....coming in separate thread.

I thought it was wonderful. Yes, maybe a little too long, but the performances were all fantastic. And I loved the look and feel of the film. I got a great sense of Hollywood in the 50s.

I saw it tonight.
It is not as good as I was hoping. What saved it, in my opinion, was the intriguing plot rather than the actual execution of the piece.
Diane Lane is, as always, great. She's one of my favorite actresses.
An award for Ben Affleck? My sister and I laughed out loud a couple of parts. He has a fleeting southern accent and a lisp as fake as the stern look on his face in the poster. I wanted to love him, but I just didn't. Totally miscast. In the hands of someone better, it wouldn't have been such a joke. The only person who could have made the character seem MORE transparent is, if course, Keanu Reeves. Hell, atleast they would have shared a surname. Total disappointment.
I hated the way the film ended. It is too long and generally unfocused.
There may be one Oscar nod for Diane Lane, but the film won't get much else, I don't think. Screenplay is pretty good, but direction is forgettable and the visuals just decent.
My favorite performance belonged to the brilliant Adrien Brody. He is a remarkable actor. Affleck could learn a thing or two.

Posted: 9/15/06 at 7:27pmI still haven't seen it yet (DAMN!), but I do like Adrian Brody . . . but is it just me or does he play every character the same way?
#49re: hollywoodland
Posted: 9/16/06 at 2:19pmI don't agree. His performances in THE PIANIST, KING KONG, and now HOLLYWOODLAND are extremely varied.

Posted: 9/16/06 at 2:40pmThe scene where he fell out of his harness appears to have happened in a different episode & one that did not have the alleyway set. It did happen just not where it is portrayed
