Good stuff Red! My parent threw us in the back of one of our dozens of station wagons almost every weekend and we'd go camping. I'd been to 35 states by the time I was ten. We were at Disney World the very first week it opened in December of 1972. We stopped at South of the Border when I95 used to end there and my dad would buy gas and we would buy souvenir pencils and such. Updated On: 1/25/05 at 02:28 PM
I can do a mean Jitterbug.
Last Song is one of my favorites Jungle...I still have the 45.
Mister Matt aren't you from the Chicago area? Do you remember Bubblegum digest? All my friends from Chicago seem to talk about that show from their childhood.
Well, Evelyn, I can dance the shag (as mostly anyone who went to college in the South can do). It's just a jitterbug on quaaludes.
I'm a great shagger, Red! It's a religion in North Carolina and of course at Myrtle Beach during the summer.
junglered - I can't believe you had The Magnificent Race! I didn't know ANYONE ELSE who had that game. My brother and I played it all the time. That was another one I used to Vaseline the bottom of the wheel to make it spin faster. We would get so anxious and excited watching the marbles spin around and hoping the purple one wouldn't land in the hole. I ALWAYS travelled by hot air balloon. LOL
Hi Somms - We stayed at a chalet in the middle of the orange groves in Clermont, Fl. in 1973 (I think) when we visited the Magic Kingdom for the first time. I think many of those groves are gone now, unfortunately. -And the 5 of us in my family piled into the green Buick estate station wagon for the trip. I've enjoyed going to WDW ever since!
Hi Boobs! - I loved all of Donna's songs. I saw her in concert in 1996 and she still sounded great.
Bongo - I don't know if Maura was shy or not...she just made an impression on me, I guess. Maybe it was her Boston accent!
boobs - I've only lived in Chicago for a few years. I grew up in Houston. We watched Villa Alegre.
I remember going to Disney World for the first time during the bicentennial when Space Mountain first opened. I bought my Disney World Bicentennial Parade lunch box there. I'll never forget that year. Everything was "star-spangeled". We camped at nearby campgrounds. We also took regular vacations driving to Monterrey, Mexico before it became too dangerous to do so.
Jungle....I was talking about "Last Song" by Edward Bear...the one hit wonder...is still on eof my favorites....but of course anything by Donna Summers too.
I went to DisneyWorld at 14 with my mother and her father and stepmother, who lived in Ocala. We whipped through there in one day. I call it "my trip to Disney with my mother and two old people." It was not the way to go, trust me.
Mr. Matt - Yes, we loved the Magnificent Race. What's so funny is that my Mom still has the game tucked away in a closet. My young nieces and nephew pulled found it not too long ago and wanted me to play with them. I really reminisced as we all tried to stay away from the purrple marble of Dastardly Dan!
SOMMS - I graduated from a large university in the state of South Carolina where everyone who was in a fraternity had to know the Shag. It was obligatory. "Myrtle Beach Days", "Summertime's Calling Me", "Little Red Book", "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy"... You know the songs...
Boobs - My bad.I was listening to Donna Summer over the weekend... I guess I've still got her on the brain. "Last Song" by Edward Bear, of course. I loved it, too. I haven't heard it on the radio in years - I wonder what happened to him?
Jungle..looks like he was just a one hit wonder...I used to like that other song..."Oh Babe, What would you say"...another one hit wonder.
Hurricane Smith.
Rath,
Did you stop at the classic Florida attraction Silver Springs in Ocala and ride on a "glass -bottomed boat"? They used to be all the rage!
We also saw the 'mermaids' at Weekie Wachee and the 'Esther Williams' pool at Cypress Gardens. I'm glad that Cypress Gardens has been saved. It closed for awhile because of low attendance with many folks more interested in a "theme park experience" these days. I understand that CG has re-opened under new ownership.
We went to Silver Springs, I think. But not a boat. It was a sucky trip all the way around - one night they wanted to take us to dinner - but they didn't bother to tell us they were taking us on a 3 hour drive to dinner!! And we didn't leave until just about dinnertime! My 14 year old hypoglycemic self was so sick.
Ahh, Boobs, we could really open it up with One Hit Wonders!
Some of my favorite 1 hit wonders from the 70s include:
"Precious and Few" - Climax
"Brandy" - Looking Glass
"Rock the Boat" - Hues Corporation
"Sky High" - Jigsaw
Brandy - love that song!!
What a good wife she would be!
It's just too darn bad that my love and my lady is the sea.
It's too bad for Brandy, but it makes for a great song!
Poor thing...I wonder if she's still wearing that braided chain...it's sooo retro.
Wasn't the name of the group Looking Glass that sang Brandy?
Yes...they were a "biker bar band" from New Jersey who got "discovered".
