How do New Yorkers do it?

I'd love more than anything to pack up and move to New York City, but I have no idea where I would start in making a living. Jobs are so hard to come by, rent is ridiculously high. I just don't know how New Yorkers (that aren't ungodly rich) do it.

A big 3 letter word helps . Rent Stabilized Apartment. Job no problem but you need to be retired. Shows cash in on every discount or offering you can. You have to give up seeing faces and sitting in cheap seats. If you go a lot and want to sit in the orchestra, you need to be Donald Trump.

You just do it. I am not Donald Trump, I see nearly everything, and I sit orchestra center towards the front. I just know how to work it. It is possible.

As for cost of living. New York is expensive, but its very doable if you're willing to share the rent with a friend or partner, get a good paying job (they say 40K+ minimum, but I think that's a little low if you have a theater habit), and set your priorities.

One big savings many New Yorkers have - and its substantial - is no car. You'd be surprised how expensive owning a car is when you consider all the associated costs.

If you're sincere in your desire to live here - just do it! It may be rough going at first, but the experience will be powerful and I suspect worth it.

All you have to do is budget and live within your means and you'll be fine. I find it's pretty easy to make a budget- it's the sticking to it that takes a bit of willpower, but you quickly learn it's better to go without something than overspend during a month.

It's when you try to do it all that you run into trouble. Decide what your priorities are and stick to them.

It's cheaper to go 20 blocks and shop at Trader Joe's rather than going to the Food Emporium down the block? Make the trip to TJ's. Buy your toothpaste at Target rather Duane Reade. Save in little ways like that and it will add up.

"Job no problem but you need to be retired." That sentence doesn't make any sense.

I agree Art, you just do it. It really depends what kind of work you do, but it's not easy to get a job. Some people do temp work for years, until a permanent position comes up. If you don't know anyone, it can be a struggle. Most people have to give up something. I rarely go out to dinner so I can go to the theater and have great seats. Every few months I go to Wegmans in New Jersey, and save a tremendous amount of money on food. That helps. My car is parked in deep Queens at my Aunt's home, saving me hundreds in Manhattan parking costs. Manhattan is a playground for the rich, but middle class people can still have a comfortable life. You just do it.

Then, there are these a$$holes:

You find ways to cut costs. For example, this week CVS has Progresso soup on sale for 99 cents. So you stock up on soup. Buying like this allows for more money to be put elsewhere.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Bloomberg turned Manhattan into an isle for the wealthy. So you live in the boroughs. Less rent, more character, less Starbucks and banks.

Bloomberg certainly is an easy target, but the fact is that he was mayor at a time of increasing globalization and international financial instability AND at a time when other metropolitan areas grew stratospherically expensive.

If you are from Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Moscow or Shanghai--or any other city whose real estate is more expensive than NYC--and you have the wherewithal to buy some good, stable, NYC real estate, it is STILL a bargain.

Simple supply-and-demand theory tells us that as long as those buyers continue to snap up $1,000,000 1-bedroom/1-bath apartments like gum-drops, NYC is only going to get more expensive.

I realize that this does not answer the question posed by the OP, but I am aggravated by the easy and oft-repeated canard that Mayor Bloomberg somehow unilaterally *decided* to make Manhattan into a luxury real-estate haven.

ETA: I can't vouch for the numbers on the linked map, and I notice that it has San Francisco at HALF the cost of NYC, which I suspect is untrue. The London, Paris and Singapore numbers seem more accurate. On the other hand, I found it on the Internet, so it MUST be true...

It was easier for me to find a job here (twice, since I was laid off from the first) than it was in California. But I wanted to work as an editor and there are way more here. Also, public transportation accessibility opens up the housing options quite a bit.

Actually, Manhattan as Isle of the rich was in fact Rockefeller's vision. With those considered support services inhabiting the boroughs.

You downsize, you live paycheck to paycheck, you do without sometimes. You end up rolling coins a lot. You find a sweet Sugar Daddy.

But it's simply not true. While the price of living in Manhattan is at an all-time high and the city's property values at or close to a high (I'm not entirely sure), it is NOT an "isle of the rich." You can afford to live in Manhattan on a budget... You just may not live in what could be perceived as a desirable neighborhood. But that's how the cookie crumbles.

How do New Yorkers do it?

How's the job market in NY these days? There are no near or medium-term advancement options for me at my present employer, so I've been actively looking for new work. When I was laid off in 2009, the job market was atrocious. Now, literally every day I'm finding 20-30 new opportunities for which I am exceptionally well qualified. It's becoming a second job just to keep up with the application process. It's wonderful -- not a complaint -- just wondering if other job seekers are experiencing this as well. In 2009, I'd be lucky to find 5-6 opportunities, which aligned with my background and skill set, each week. I'm looking in major metropolitan areas across the country -- NY, DC, LA, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, San Diego -- but I'd say 60-70% of the jobs I find are based in NY. Of course, this will vary by industry. I work in marketing/branding. Anyone else seeing this?

Be malleable, as others have said. If you can't afford the West Village, then don't look for apartments in the West Village. Don't be afraid of the outer boroughs, but if it's truly Manhattan or bust for you, look for the neighborhoods that have the more comparatively affordable apartments. It does help to move with a job, there really is no denying that, or to have some financial cushion. But that won't be everyone's reality. Make a budget and stick to it. Live within your means. That's really the secret to living anywhere, but it's especially true in a place like New York, where it's very easy to splurge.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body
