@ SuttonRoss: That is YOUR experience but don't try to pass it off as if it's the norm, because it's not, because that is how your post "reads".

For the record I never once said I thought that someone would get paid the same amount for the same job here as in Arkansas. So I have no idea where you're pulling that out from.

I can take many guesses but I want to keep it nice. It is Christmas after all.

my new york experience was that i was given access to penthouses and brownstones simply because i was me. i think that everyone would probably get that kind of thing too. they just have to be more like me.

Roommates and converted/flex rooms. Since I moved to NYC, I've always lived in apartments with a converted room. Essentially, a wall is put up in the living room, creating an extra bedroom. It's a great way to lower the rent. I've also known people who lived with a couple. Sometimes, the couple will pay more, and you less.

Papa, whose sperm do you sell and what is your method of harvesting it? I am sure that is a money maker as well!

Just to make a 'slight' detour from the topic.
I learnt all about the word 'priorities' when I had a very glamorous French boyfriend who lived in a 5th floor walk up in Paris that resembled a cupboard,BUT,hanging from all the overhead pipes were the latest designer clothes. He and his friends lived their life on the streets, looking sensational, knowing they would never own a house or even a car,so their priorirty was to look good,be seen, eat out and maximise every moment they were not working. No matter where it migth be Paris New York Rome, prioritise what is really important to you NOW,and find a way to do it--we only have one shot at this life anyway.Happy 2014 wherever you end up.

As any New Yorker knows, one CAN NOT LIVE W/O bi monthly or weekly visits to:
JACK's, (32nd st, 40th st, and 45th st)

and

JACK"S WORLD.

Save a fortune!!

(Although we really miss ODD JOB, and WEBERs)

Also, doing a lot of careful shopping on Amazon saves a fortune also, and is so convenient.

Get used to rolling quarters, dimes and nicles as well. Some months I used to need them to make it through.

I'm a public school teacher, and while we make a significant amount more than other areas of the country, it is difficult. Very hard to save any money, or allocate any percentage to my retirement. If you're moving here solely for the purpose of seeing shows, you may want to save your pennies and live elsewhere.

On the positive side, you don't need a car if you live here, so that's a huge savings right there.

.DRS, I'm curious- where do you teach? Are you saying that your school system does not automatically deduct from your salary towards pension? never heard of that.

Also, I wonder if your school system has a credit union type of plan where they will automatically take any amount you choose from your check and put it in a savings account.

I teach for a NYC DOE School. Yes, they do deduct for pension, however I am talking about delegating money for my retirement fund... not sure of the word. Deferred compensation? So that you're not taxed now on it, and you get it when you retire.

Do you mean tax deferred IRA? You can set that up yourself if you want, but your pension is your retirement fund. I'm on my teacher's pension and it isn't all that bad.

I was pretty much forced to move to NYC. I had been planning the move but the recession forced me to move 2 years sooner than planned. I lived with a friend for a year while working a part time job that someone I met here online reccomended me for (and for which I am still grateful). Living in NYC has not been possible even with 2 jobs now. I live in Jersey City and pay 875 a month for my own place. I was upset for a while that I wasn't living in NYC as I had dreamed I would but it is all good. I spend most of the time in the city and I live in a nice quiet neighborhood. And I have a huge railroad apt.
