Besty-
Is it true that Toshiba is lobbying that those with HD DVD players purchased before the bill is passed get an additional $250 and 5 free movies in an effort to save their format?

Oh, when I said what refund, I thought we were talking about the tax money you get back when you overpaid. I never get any back.
I'm planning to buy an ipod so that's it for me!

I can see it now - General Mills will come out with a movie based cereal with an HD DVD inside as the prize.
If they were smart and bold a few months ago - they could have done what Tivo does - and that is to offer a player free (via rebate) to jumpstart people before the holidays.
Ah well - back to the discussion at hand. I will probably just put the rebate in the bank and continue living and paying expenses as usual. I'm not sure it's going to prompt me to immediately spend it on anything as I don't really 'want' anything at the moment

I just think this whole thing is so WEIRD. We already consume more than any other country on the planet, several times over. Our economy is 70 percent based on our consumption. We're fat and we buy too much stuff! Our garages are filled to the top. Our cars are now used as extra storage space. We celebrate Christmas starting on the 4th of July!
Every year for the past decade, the media and marketing companies PLEAD with us to buy more at Christmas or we're not doing our part. Our part!?! To save the planet by hoarding more Barbies, Sees Candy boxes, iPods and lawn furniture? REALLY?!
It's horrifying.

Posted: 4/29/08 at 3:39pmnow, besty, you could do your part for the economy by seeing patronizing a local theatre, scheduling a series of daytrips that use mass transit where you can contribute to the local service economy by eating in local restaurants or patronizing local taverns, converting your automobile to run on vegetable oil or contributing to a local charity that helps the less fortunate in your community.
