TJ is just too crowded and too ridiculous an experience with all the strollers and high school kids and 14th Street retail shoppers, and it's too inconveniently located, for me to get an adequate take on their wares.
I tried mochi. Didn't like it. Got a frozen pasta entree. Nope.
But I need a cheaper option and I will try to go back. The Associated in my neighborhood sells organic milk for FOUR DOLLARS a carton, and the nearby Whole Foods...I mean, $67 for one bag of groceries. I'm freaking upset.
Well organic milk is always outrageous.
I LOVE TJ's! So many veggie options. Their lightly salted dry roasted almonds are fantastic and so cheap. I try to avoid the cookies because they are too good. The almond butter thins? Yeah, I must stay away. I love their soaps and lotions, but I wasn't a fan of the Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner.
And the 3 Buck Chuck is actually really tasty!
All night at work I was looking forward to coming home and having chips and the 5 layer dip I got there. Now I'm sitting here eating it. YUM!

Have you had their three layer hummous, tomato and cilantro spread from the refrigerated section?
It's a wow. Love it with blue tortilla chips.
That makes four colors!
I've only had the 5 layer one. It's good. The more layers, the better!
I'm going to come up with a recipe for a 30-layer dip. It'll taste like everything.
LOL!!!
Now I'm craving 7 layer Mexican dip.
The five layer one has cheddar, guacamole, beans, salsa, sour cream.
I once had a similar recipe but you'd heat the beans and cheddar, then put the cold ingredients on top. then serve-the hot and cold together is delicious!
That sounds yummy!
I usually do (bottom to top) bean dip, guacamole, sour cream mixed with taco seasoning, chopped tomatoes, black olives, green onion, and shredded cheddar.
That's practically the same exact thing as TJ's! The best!
I went yesterday and bought:
3 freezer mac and cheeses
2 pomegranates
2 grapefruits
2 bags of pita chips
2 cartons of juice
1 baguette
1 loaf of bread
1 freezer chicken pomodoro
1 freezer pesto flatbread
1 freezer tortellini bowl
1 freezer baked ziti (give me a break, I'm in college!)
4 bottles of sauvignon blanc
and the total was... $53. I always look at my receipt because I'm sure there most be some mistake!
And without the wine, it only would have been $40! (assuming you bought the 3 buck chuck anyway)
Hahah, 3 buck chuck is my be-all and end-all when it comes to wine. My palate is... less than sophisticated, shall we say?
I must not neglect to mention my favorite food-pizza! TJ's margharita is really good!
notScott, half the time my wine is in a box so neither is mine!
I'm dying for that damn Mexican dip.
It is my favorite store I have not been there in months and I miss the Orange Flavor Chicken, The shrimp and the incredible thai shrimp dumplings. I also adore the shumai.
The place rocks. I hear there will be one on west 72nd street and I am counting down the days till it opens.
The trek to 14th is difficult and the lines are long but are so worth it.
I live for TJ'S!
THREE buck Chuck?
*scoff*
It's TWO bucks on this side of the Rockies.
Incidentally, I was actually working at a Trader Joe's when the Charles Shaw craze was at its peak. I never quite "got" it... just nodded and smiled as customer after customer put giant boxes in their carts, then needed help hauling the crazy grape juice to their cars.
It's 2 buck chuck most places......
But really Lizzie, it's not bad at all for the price!
lately, my breakfast every morning has consisted of a TJ rice tortilla toasted up in the toaster oven, with TJ cranberry apple butter spread on it.
soooo good.
i also love their butternut apple soup, which they only sell around here in the fall.
My staples there:
Meditteranean pizza
frozen chicken fillets
bean and rice burritos
some decadent cheese
POP chips
fresh baked pretzel rolls
2-3 Buck Chuck
hummus
pita chips
100 calorie chocolate bars
I usually don't buy their toiletries...any standouts?
LOVE the Comodynes Oats Makeup Remover Facial Cleanser cloths. I don't know where else you can get them, but they are big and gentle and just my favorite. The Trader Joe's hand lotions are wonderful.
