I'm Not Fond of Them

So, how DO you feel about their desire to take away women's reproductive freedom?

I, personally, am anti-abortion for the most part.

You're antiabortion, for the most part? Don't you realize that if Bush is reelected, it will be no abortions, period. So, if a women were to get raped and become pregnant, she will have to have the baby. Bush has enough trouble with the no children left behind act as it is, imagine how many more children will be left behind, if every woman who gets raped and becomes pregnant must have her child.
Not only will there be more kids, but your body will no longer be yours. I thought this was a free country, I guess I was wrong.

I am definitely more against abortion than for it. (Lord, that sentence sounded SO John Kerry)

If you look at the statistics, the women who have to give birth through rape, it's a very small number. I believe the problem lies in the fact that a large number of young teenage girls can go in and just get an abortion. THAT'S wrong.

If they are taught about having safe sex, and taught that there is a chance that they will be pregnant, I think that it's horrible that they don't have to face the final consequence, they can just go and have the baby killed. And they might even continue having sex- and the cycle could really go on.

IF abortion must be legal, I would only allow it so in rape cases and in cases where it poses an extreme health risk for the mother, which is very rare. Otherwise, I'm against it.

I'm Not Fond of Them

interesting.
So we're educating people by teaching them not to have sex in the first place.
Ok! Let's make abortion illegal.
Now, next step. Marriage is in shambles. We're already going to get rid of those silly gays...I've got it!
Let's really teach people what it means to committ into a marriage for life. And, to really shove it home, let's outlaw divorce!
Hell, it's all Biblical. If you're going to tell me God says no killing babies in the womb, don't try telling me he's content with the divorce rate in this country.

Guenevere - out of curiosity, what is your bases for the statement, "THAT'S wrong." ? And do you have any idea how it sounds that you refer to the life you're so vigorously protecting as a 'consequence'?

I have been staying out of this for a while, but I would like to ask a question regarding the above statement. It's not the first time I read on this board about these teenage mothers "having to face the consequences of their actions". I would like to know what you think about the children who have to exist simply as an example or to teach a lesson. By all means, we need to do better at conducting comprehensive sex education. And if we can do *that* right, we wouldn't need to make abortion illegal.

The sex education at my school last year was SO GOOD. It was, like, the smartest thing my school has ever done. I have no decided no sex until I'm mature enough to handle the consequences that could come with my actions.

The right-wing philosophy toward human sexuality and its consequences: God has willed that you must only be attracted to the opposite sex--and then, once attracted, do absoltely zero about it until you meet The Only One For You. Until then, yo have but a single option--to just say no; under no circumstances should you have useful information to self-protect, because that alone will entice you to sin. And if in a rare moment of weakness under the influence of a liberal atheist heathen you do sin, you must have your baby and pay for your transgression against nature for life, raising your child to be a good, God-fearing Christian--at every waking moment teaching him/her to do not as you did (conceiving a child in sinful moment of "mistake") but as you say. Thus is the life-affirming circle of life. To behave in any other way -- say, to very responsibly look out for yourself, and not bring more unwanted children onto our crowded planet -- is to embrace decadance and worship the Anti-Christ. Amen.

Guen, do you think those teenage girls take getting an abortion lightly? That's a kind of punishment, too. And the world already has too many unwanted children left in dumpsters and toilet stalls.

Has anyone else ever wondered about the fact that given that abortion is so prevalent and talked-about, that some of these teenage girls don't see a newborn baby as any different from a fetus? That if it's so acceptable to terminate the pregnancy, what is so wrong about leaving the baby in a dumpster or toilet? It's just one tiny step further, right? I've wondered about that.

And I've also always had an issue with the "it's my body" argument. What about the fetus's/baby's body? To me that's an incredibly self-centered argument that's very commonly used as a women's rights issue. These are just questions I've wrestled with over the years as I've been told over and over how abortion is necessary, even though as Guen pointed out, the statistics show a very small percentage are terminations of pregnancies out of rape or danger to the life of the mother.

Rath - at the very least, I think most people view the birthing process as a transition. I'm not sure any but the deranged would blur the boundary you're talking about.
#64

I'm Not Fond of Them

But if a kid is leaving a newborn in a toilet, they ARE confused, and at least temporarily "deranged." That line is blurred for them by what they hear and see all the time. Imagine being a pregnant teenager, afraid to tell anyone, and giving birth by yourself in your bedroom or in a toilet stall. Wouldn't you be perhaps not quite of sound mind? I just have a big problem with how those kids are vilified by the same people who would have had encouraged her to have an abortion. I don't think these kids in see a big difference between a fetus and some tiny thing that just fought their way out of their body.

I'm actually staggered that nowadays people would want to ban a womens right to choose. Think of all the unwanted children which would be born if this were to happen. You actually would want kids born into families who can't afford them, don't want them, or because of illness or drug dependency can't take care of them? That to me is a bigger obscenity.

I don't understand Republicans. They care so much before a child is born, but once it's born, they are on there own. Cut day care money, cut programs to get parents off drugs, cut after school activities, cut so many more social programs.

Also, why are Republicans who are against abortions also against birth control?

I'm Not Fond of Them

Rath - I think if they've chosen to have the child in a toilet, they've already made the choice to abandon it before they went in. Obviously being a man, I'm not going to presume to know the anguish of childbirth (as Whoopi has said, if men had to go through childbirth, abortion would be a sacrament,) and I'm not questioning that the pressures put on young women can be enormous (we've all heard horror stories about girls being shunned because of pregnancy - kind of like ostracizing gay teens.) BUT, all that considered, there are choices that these girls make along the way, and I'm not sure that a girl who has made the choice to conceal her pregnancy and have the child away from helpful guidance is all-of-a-sudden overcome with the trauma of childbirth and decides at that moment to abandon.

Certainly a large part of the issue is the stigmatization that goes along with sex and the effects of it - but then we're back talking about the influence of religion.
#67

I'm Not Fond of Them

Teenage pregnancy is traumatic to begin with - from the moment the girl is aware of her situation. It's just a progression of the trauma to conceal it, and then not allow the child to live. I don't think they're thinking as clearly as you're giving them credit for.

Rath - perhaps not - but I would extend that 'unclear' thinking to the moment they decided to have sex in the first place. I may not be able to understand how women experience some things in life, but I do understand the sexual impulse, and I don't think it's something that has to be accepted as some uncontrollable urge. What we need is education, and YET AGAIN we're back battling the constricions placed by religious ideology (is there an echo in here?)

I'm certainly not willing to place myself in a position to judge anyone else's experience of life. But I have to wonder, in this situation - as well as all others in life - where does the individual resposibility end? I'm a little worn down by the process of always trying to find out 'where the blame lies,' when the truth is that we are all resposible for our own choices.

"Has anyone else ever wondered about the fact that given that abortion is so prevalent and talked-about, that some of these teenage girls don't see a newborn baby as any different from a fetus?"

No, I have personally never wondered about that. Because that is not what is happening when people give birth, (like that young woman at the prom who left the baby in the toilet). My boss had a roommate in college who was a large young woman who was pregnant and nobody knew. This was back in the glory days before Roe v. Wade, so legal safe abortions were not an option. This woman gave birth in the rest room in the dorm and abandoned the baby in a trash can. She completely disassociated and was so traumatized by giving birth in a bathroom stall and had been in such denial about being pregnant in the first place that she really had no memory of what happened after the most severe pain began. This is what trauma does to the human psyche.

And Guen, I'm really shocked that you, a lesbian, would actually seek to limit other women's reproductive freedom because of a personal belief about abortion. You notice, I never mentioned abortion, I mentioned reproductive freedom. You don't honestly think that goons that control your Republican party today have any plans to stop at abortion in restricting that freedom, do you? Check out how the CDC website has been purged of any mention of condoms at all during the Bush administration. The people behind the stop abortion movement are against birth control at all. Randall Terry, the deposed and ruined head of Operation Rescue considered the pill to be abortive as well. The pill!

So, I would do my best, if I were you Guen, to think about other people in the world and whether or not the choices you would make should be forced on others. If you are capable of that kind of empathy.

Namo touches upon what, for me, is the most chilling aspect of this Administration. Researchers at NIH and CDC have been told that they need to toe the ideological line or their funding gets cut. The climate of fear in our research institutes is pervasive: research on gay and LESBIAN health issues, reproductive health, AIDS prevention mentioning anything other than abstinence, and of course anything to do with stem cells have been blacklisted.

We need our health policy driven by science not ideology.

Per Namo's remarks on the Pill: Last night NBC ran a piece on a growing trend among born-again pharmacists--refusing to fill a prescription for contraception. One woman refused to deal with the morning after -- and quit her post. But another man wouldn't fill birth control of ANY kind. What startled me was the head of some pharmacist association who said "we have to respect their religious beliefs..." Why? What about the patient's? What business it is of theirs what's between a doctor and patient? A pharmacist thinks he/she has the right to intervene about STOPPING an unwanted pregnancy? So a Christian Scientist pharmacist can refuse to give you ... ANYTHING because of his beliefs?!

Everyone,go back to Margaret Atwood's novel, The Handmaid's Tale. Prophetic, that, more than we knew.
