I'm Not Fond of Them

The fetus is part of my body and therefore is mine, making it my body, my choice, and I will not have anyone telling me what I can and cannot do with it. That is not a Democratic or Republican thing, it is a universal right.
I know of a lot of teenage mothers who have been raped and are too ashamed to report it. They have had their babies and if they are not left in a garbage can because they don't know what to do with them, they're brought up by these teenage mothers in an atmosphere of anger and shame. What type of adults do you think these children become? Wouldn't you rather these children be aborted before they can even feel or think what is going on rather than live a life of h*ll?

The debate is that studies show they CAN feel.

Some of us who are generally liberal are perhaps more sensitive to the other side because we know that if we had been conceived in this day and age rather than 40+ years ago, we would have been aborted. And perhaps our childhoods sucked because there was no money and our mothers were completely ill-equipped to handle raising children, but we are still very happy we had a chance at life. That's all.

I'm sorry, that is just such a non-discussion point. There are any number of variables that could or could not have influenced whether we were born or not. Getting all sentimental with the "it could have been me" approach to aborted fetuses does absolutely nothing to make your feelings about what is okay or not applicable to all females in this country. None. And you know what, if you hadn't been born, you wouldn't know about it!

Right.

That's why the term "pro-choice" is accurate and important. I have never met someone (outside of the politburo in Beijing) who argues that abortion should be used as birth control. Abortion like all surgical procedures should be safe, legal and rare.
Stop worrying about what I'm doing -- focus instead on what you're eating.

"Has anyone else ever wondered about the fact that given that abortion is so prevalent and talked-about, that some of these teenage girls don't see a newborn baby as any different from a fetus? That if it's so acceptable to terminate the pregnancy, what is so wrong about leaving the baby in a dumpster or toilet? It's just one tiny step further, right? I've wondered about that."

I really don't believe that. But if it were true, than the answer should be in education and guidance. If we have to resort to taking away choices from individuals because we're afraid these girls cannot appreciate the difference between a fetus at an early stage vs. newborn baby than we're really doing a bad job raising them, as a society. Also, keeping abortion legal is not in anyway the same as encouraging young women to have them done. But it's important the choice is available.

And the examples Namo & Auggie brought up are truly terrifying. Again an example of why religion and state should be kept separate.

"Can't I be dramatic and sentimental???"

Sure. Just not when it comes to science, medical decisions and whether or not you use your drama and sentiment to impede the rights of others.
