re: I Just Had The Best Ice Cream That I Ever Had

And 1 in 9 people are lactose intolerant but I'm not whining about the fact that I have to read the labels on everything buy for my mother just to make sure she can have it. My mom can barely eat anything at family events because there's lactose in nearly everything that's made. It's, literally, in almost everything. Pick up a pack of hot dogs and read the label. It's in there. Prepackaged lunch meat? Yup, it's in there. Spaghetti sauce? It's in there.

Many candy stores have a sugar free section. Do they have a lactose free section? Nope.

Example:

re: I Just Had The Best Ice Cream That I Ever Had

For the second time in a month, I ate in a restaurant that served basil ice cream. I can't say I find the thought of herb-flavored ice creams all that appealing, and this one proved to be no great shakes. Another restaurant served rose ice cream. This I found unusual, very sweet, but not bad overall.

I was wondering if anyone else had tried herb or flower-flavored ice creams.

For a while, I've been wanting to try green tea ice cream. It certainly sounds delicious.

re: I Just Had The Best Ice Cream That I Ever Had

Briefly threadjacking.

Eris, is your mother lactose intolerant or allergic to milk? She does know that there's medication for lactose intolerance, right? And if it IS only lactose intolerance at a normal level, then taking those pills should enable her to eat many things without a problem. She may not be able to straight-up drink a glass of milk without feeling sick, but it would certainly allow her to eat candies and lunch meats, etc. that simply contain lactose as a sweetener. A lot of lactose intolerant people are, with the pills, able to eat ice cream, cheese, yogurt, etc. as well.

I was born with a serious, life-threatening dairy allergy; it's an immune intolerance to the milk protein called casein, and I've lived my entire life, from the time I could read, having to read, re-read and triple re-read the labels on absolutely any food I touch or put into my mouth. It's far more of a hassle -- and far more dangerous -- than lactose intolerance could ever hope to be. People always think I'm crazy when I say I've seen dairy in hot dogs or lunch meat. If your mother truly does have to avoid dairy on such a specified level, have you looked into Kosher food? It eliminates an entire step, because you can't mix milk and meat. It's one of the biggest tricks to finding meat products free of dairy, in any form. However, keep in mind that the "lactates" are not the same as lactose. They're often not dairy-derived at all, and most of them are perfectly safe. Do some research and you'll easily be able to find out which ones. I think part of the reason you're feeling so restricted is that you're reading the labels incorrectly -- and in turns, you're actually avoiding a lot more things than you need to, and limiting yourself more than you have to.

Anyway, it's not nearly as hard as you're making it out to be. Maybe it's because it's all I've ever known, but, if you want some more suggestions, feel free to send me a message.

re: I Just Had The Best Ice Cream That I Ever Had

Dug this thread up to say that I just got back from the store and they now have FRIENDLY'S in NY!!! My favorite brand ice cream! They didn't have my favorite flavor, maple walnut, but I got the choc. chip mint. I guess the "low" price of $4.99 for half gallon was an introductory price.

YAY!

I love Friendly's! They used to have a peppermint ice cream with chunks of candy cane when I was a kid. I don't know if they still have it though.

They had a flavor called hmm, either banana split, or sundae, or something. It has three different flavors of ice cream in there, and each flavor has some good stuff mixed in with it. I didn't buy it because of the danger factor of my eating it all at once.

re: I Just Had The Best Ice Cream That I Ever Had

- green tea ice cream is HEAVENLY, so different

- my son has a peanut allergy: so if you want to have a pissing contest about allergies, he's right up there. There doesn't even have to BE peanuts in the ingredients...if ANY of the machinery is used for a product that does use peanuts in any form (including peanut oil) he cannot have it.

- he can never eat baked goods from a bake sale or school intermission or when cupcakes are brought to school -- even when the ingredients are peanut free...you have no idea if the pans that were used recently had peanut butter on them.

- yesterday we went to an amusement park that had this disclaimer: most of our stands use or could be cross contaminated with our use of peanut oil. explain THAT to an 8 year old that just wants to be like everyone else.

-- I do not expect special treatment for my son at school or at functions....he needs to live in the real world. I don't think his sister or anyone else should pay for his allergy. We have peanut butter in the house.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I just went to this place called IceBerry and I had honeydew flavored soft-serve frozen yogurt with blueberries on it. I think I fell over with glee on the way back.

You can make your own green tea ice gream. Just get powdered green tea (available at any decent Asian grocer)and mix a half teaspoon of it in with some vanilla ice cream.

I work at an ice cream store, and we serve Cedar Crest. I love that stuff.

How about Howard Johnsons - the ice cream for tourists? If only they had a store open in Times Square again.

I just had a chocolate dipped chocolate ice cream cone from Dairy Queen. It wasn't the best ice cream I ever had, but it was pretty damn good.

Oh, danmag... you always force me into my deepest rooted culinary confessions!

Magic Shell may be the most wonderful chemical concoction ever made. I've been to some creameries where they have fifty or sixy different flavors! The hard shell on the softest of ice-cream is truly something special. Chocolate shell on vanilla ice cream is pretty close to heaven (maybe some toasted coconut too?)!

They have it availible in stores, but only a few flavors (CHOCOLATE, CHOCOLATE FUDGE, REESE'S and CHERRY). There is a new flavor, Confetti, that is so wonderfully festive and fun that it can make the dullest day a little bit brighter!

Magic Shell is one of the only things that truly lives up to its title!
