I LOVE Where I Live and I HATE Where I Live — Page 2

I LOVE Center Valley because I can make fun of all of the weird people who live around me (like the guy who spent 10+ years building a totem pole out of firewood for no apparent reason), I am only 1 1/2 hours away from New York and even shorter on a good day, and I have really amazing friends and a really amazing school. But, technically, the school is just a stepping stone for me to go to New York and my friends are all going to New York. So yeah. But friends are good. School is good. Family is good (immediate family, anyway. And that's only occasionally.) Oh, and we have a cool amusement park by us. Yeah.

I HATE Center Valley because the town borders are only this one crappy intersection where the traffic lights never work. Pretty pathetic. My town is an intersection. Grand.

If you're poor - you're hated...but if you're rich - you're hated even more...and God help you if you're middle class. Then you're a poseur.

People think that because they watched Cats without falling asleep, they're artsy.

Racism and homophobia are trendy. I know a guy who hangs a Confederate flag on his wall -- and he is NOT Southern nor does he know anyone who is Southern. And he says "N----r" constantly. And my own grandfather tried to get people to boycott a bank because they asked him if he wanted his transaction in Spanish...or so he told me at Thanksgiving dinner, as I sat with my mouth agape. The word "gay" has become so synonymous with "stupid" in my area, that the principal of my old high school used it in his speech...regarding us tucking in our shirts ("Now, I know that it looks gay, but you have to bear with me.") Ughhhhh. Disgust. Vomit. Ick.

The restraunts suck. There's one good Italian place and that's it. Even the Burger King is sub-par.


....that about covers it. Wow. I went off on a tangent.

I LOVE living in Oregon cause I can drive an hour and, depending on which way I go, end up at the beach, skiiing in the mountains or hiking in the desert. And we don't have a sales tax.

I HATE living in Oregon cause it's 3,000 miles from New York. Also no one outside the state can pronounce it right (it's not Oregawn, it's Oregin!).

I LOVE living in New York because of THE FOOD!!! Seriously, chinese food at 3 am? Where else?!?
I LOVE living in New York because this is where BROADWAY IS! HOLLA!!!!!

The only time I hate living in New York is when the A train is running local downtown. Ugh. My commute becomes almost 40 minutes. But I LOVE living in Inwood!!! Dominicans and Puerto Ricans are good people.

I love Chicago because it's not snooty.
I love Chicago because it's in the Central time zone.

I hate Chicago because the weather sucks 350 days a year.
I hate Chicago because everything is SO damned expensive. (not as bad as Manhattan, but close)
I hate Chicago because our mayor is a criminal.
I hate Chicago because everything downtown closes at 6pm.

I LOVE LIVING IN MICHIGAN BECAUSE: almost every American knows vaguely where it is (up near Canada with the lakes), vaguely what it looks like (2 pieces, and I live in the bottom one that looks like a glove), and believes it exists (unlike, say Wyoming or Delaware). I mean think about it. Try to picture the shape of a state. I bet you can (at least vaguely) do California, Texas, Florida, Nevada, and Michigan. And maybe Kentucky. But can you picture Illinois? Tennessee? Georgia? Virginia? And pretty much any state in the West and Plains regions? It's not easy. And do you know where states are? Well, I don't. I have no frickin' clue where Wymoing is. Or Mississippi. And I know that Alabama and Georgia are next to each other, but I don't know which is on the right and which is on the left. But if you look on a globe where state lines are not clearly marked, the easy ones are California, Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, Texas, and Michigan. Why Michigan? Because of the damn lakes. Any globe you look at, you can still see the glove of Michigan. And Michigan has to exist. Auto industry. Rap industry. Madonna. So at least when I say I'm from Michigan, people have some vague assemblance of an idea what that means. If I meet someone from North Dakota, well, I just know it's above South Dakota. And near Canada. That's about it.

I HATE LIVING IN MICHIGAN BECAUSE: there is not enough theatre.

I LOVE LIVING IN INDIANA BECAUSE: I can cling to the hope that I will someday meet son_of_a_gunn_25. *sigh*

I HATE LIVING IN INDIANA BECAUSE: they put squash in EVERYTHING here! And they don't have Daylight Savings time. Argh! Damn farmers!

I LOVE LIVING BY SOUTH BEND BECAUSE: I love my college, and my friends at Notre Dame are the most amazing guys ever, even though they don't know a damn thing about theatre.

I HATE LIVING BY SOUTH BEND BECAUSE: it is the grossest city in the world. I don't know if you can even call it a city. The McDonalds went out of business.

I LOVE LIVING IN THE MIDWEST BECAUSE: We have the most neutral accents in the U.S., which very helpful for theatre. (I actually got a part once because the psycho director had a huge problem with 'regionalisms', and no one else could say the word 'ashes' the way she wanted them to.)

I HATE LIVING IN THE MIDWEST BECAUSE: I really don't hate it. But I do hate when people confuse the Plains States with the Midwest. The Midwest is: Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. The Plains States include: Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, etc. People that live in other areas (such as my friend from D.C.) sometimes think that the Plains States are the Midwest, and the Midwest is "the Great Lake States". Please note that Minnesota and Iowa do not even touch the great lakes. And yes, technically the Plains States look like they fit into the middle of the west, but keep in mind that the Midwest region was named before what is now "the West" was part of this country.

I love living in CHICAGO for more reasons than i could list...its the perfect city in my opinion (especially for a theatre person).
I hate living in CHICAGO because....i'll get back to you on that.

I love living in PITTSBURGH because i go to a wonderful school and just love the program i'm in and the people around me.
I hate live in PITTSBURGH because it's a very dull city with very dull people. And the weather & public transportation here is absolute crap.
