So you took a job at a toy store? I mean sure, you quit after a week, but what did you expect to find at a TOY STORE?
Like if a customer was looking for a certain item and we couldn't find it out front but there was some in the stock room. The manager would just say we don't have any left, just so they won't have to go in the stock room to get it.
And that makes it ok? Sounds like bad managers to me. But I guess if the managers think poor customer service is acceptable, then they can't fault the employees for the behaviors they practice themselves. No wonder you have so many rude customers.

Through years of personal customer service, I've found that generally, when good customer service is provided, you'll find that you have fewer rude customers. Rude people will always exist, but poor management and poor customer service only exacerbates the problem. There is a good way to handle rudeness, and a bad way. Maintaining firm composure with a calm response is good and if it doesn't work, then as an employee, it is your duty to refer the unsatisfied customer to your Assistant Manager or Manager. If they want to handle things poorly, that's up to them, but it doesn't mean they are an example to be followed. Sort of like if the Manager is stealing inventory or skimming from the tills, it doesn't mean it's ok for their employees to do it, either. Lying to, tricking or retaliating against the customer is not only unacceptable, it will also lead to tarnishing not only your reputation, but potentially the reputations of all the staff. When you lie or mislead customers, especially those who are already unhappy, you are inviting them to believe the worst of the store and its employees and most likely, they will spread the word, trashing you and anyone else who works in the store, to as many people as possible including the customer relations department for your store.
A good manager will know how to handle a rude customer without placing blame on the employee, but will support the employee and help provide the necessary tools for the employee to handle the situation in the future. I'm glad you don't get in trouble with your managers, but it sounds like they are rather lazy and immature based on what you have said.
SM2 - Is your inventory logged in by computer? It sounds like if there are unopened boxes of inventory, then it probably has to be logged in to the computer system so it can be counted and priced and sent to the registers before they can sell the items. Otherwise, they can't keep track of inventory and their accounting records could get really screwed up.

I don't even believe 90% of what alxscrz2 is saying. I love how he thinks painting all his coworkers as unprofessional and rude will make his own behavior somehow acceptable.
Charming. And all too indicative of much of your generation's attitude.
Hah. Blaming the generation is about as valid as blaming the generation of the miserable failures who raised him.

The best rule of thumb is to treat every customer as if they were a secret shopper because they just might be. A secret shopper will ask you to get things out of the back and may even push your buttons to see how you'll react. It's what they're paid for. I was shopped not long before I left retail and I scored a 97%. The only reason I didn't get 100% is because I forgot to add on at the cash wrap (ei offer an item at checkout).
I've worked at Warner Brother's Store, Gymboree, Hollywood Video, Thrift (now known as Rite Aid), Border's Express, and Disney Store. I've seen pretty much everything and I worked hard at every one of those jobs.
You're hired to do a job and receive a paycheck. IMO you should do it to the best of your abilities.

Posted: 12/14/09 at 3:40pmUgh. I hate suggestive selling. I always preferred working in places that didn't try and force people to buy something they didn't want at the last minute. I have to say my worst experience with management, training and sales tactics was Banana Republic. The particular location where I worked was a nightmare (and has since closed), but customers LOVED the service. I was always reprimanded for not reaching my quota of new credit accounts (even threatened termination). I always dutifully suggested opening a Banana Republic card to every customer, but you can't FORCE people to get a credit card. The manager observed and agreed that I did exactly what I was told to do, but that it is "policy" that I have my name attached to a certain number of new credit accounts per week. It was asinine, especially when I was never trained to do anything other than man the dressing rooms.

"Jane2, im not the only one in that store that does, a lot of other people that work there do it too. Also we have to deal with the rudest customers, they get angry if their coupons don't work. They also start cursing at us or call us stupid if the store doesn't carry what they are looking for. So to get back at them we make them go to the wrong places. I don't like to keep my mouth shut when a person calls me stupid or something else but I keep it shut at this job because I need the job. I just find other ways to get back at them, like most of us do"
Sorry, but you are in a service industry and it is your job to be nice even when you think a customer is rude. If you are rude to them, and they decide to take it further, it is YOU who are fault and not them. You may not like it, but that's how it is. And telling me that you're not the only one who does it is not excuse for your poor job performance.
I work in a service position now and I come across every type of person there is on earth. I know what I'm talking about.

"Don't get me wrong, if a customer treats me right and isn't rude, ill treat them with respect and such. But if you call me stupid then F#*# you, im going to treat rude also. I treat people, the way they treat me. No one has a right to call anyone stupid, no matter how frustrated they are."
You are in the wrong profession. You're clearly not cut out for what you are/aren't doing. I wonder if you'll be fired before your tenure is up. What an attitude.

And Jane2, I don't have to be nice to anyone. Those customers don't mean anything to me. Im just there for the paycheck.
It sounds like you don't understand the concept of a customer service position and what is required to earn that paycheck. If you don't want to do your job, then you shouldn't be paid for it.

I've never had an issue with suggestive selling but I've always worked in stores that weren't dictators about it. Other than pre-selling the DVDs at Disney it was always my choice as to what to add on. A lot of the time it depended on what was being purchased. If someone came up with an outfit I might ask "Did you see the matching socks?" Disney had a lot of 2for and 3for offers. So if someone came up with two pieces from the 3/$12 children's dinnerware promo I might suggest they pick out a third piece. Each piece was $5.50 so the third piece would only cost them a dollar more. Or I might go around the store and find stuff that was a really great bargain. Like mugs that were originally $12 but were now selling for $0.99. I'd bring them all up to the counter and point out how much they were. Stuff like that. adding on was strongly encouraged but I never had a quota. I guess that's why I didn't mind it. And usually the customers didn't mind either because maybe they had missed the matching socks or maybe they needed a teacher gift and were glad to get an inexpensive item. Or whatever.

the only people that call others stupid and are rude are the snotty white women that go there with their coupons and get mad when the coupons dont work. all other customer are very pleasant towards us
You probably think it's so cool to be perfectly honest about your obnoxious attitude in your posts. With each statement you make, I want to slap your smug entitled face a little more. LOL - Jane2

You're 21. That's what I mean, alx. Let me leave you with this thought -as someone else stated here, all it takes is one person who takes your perceived rudeness to your superior, and that's it. It isn't worth it if you're really needing that check.
If someone is needlessly rude to me at my job, I laugh to myself and smile at them.
