Posted: 12/14/09 at 12:22amI was down there and thought they might have so I popped in. I'm glad I didn't get it there anyways because I found a really beautiful one at Delphinium, right next to my apt and I like to buy there whenever possible, anyways.

"We wouldn't carry any of that type of stuff here". I said "What do you mean 'That Kind of Stuff'"? and they said "That kind of Jewish stuff".
They wouldn't carry Jewish stuff? Strange since Macy's was owned by JEWS.
Boy, they would have heard from me if they told me that.

Well in Jordan's case I hope somebody from Macy's HR department reads this cuz that is effed up in all kinds of ways.
Jane- We are not all like that, or at least I hope I, myself, and others do not project like that.
You cannot do customer service if you are bothered by people which is what retail is all about. I also have had trouble directing people, as I am new, but thankfully it is in a rather small space and I have an awesome co-worker who knows the place like the back of her hand. In short, ask your co-workers and higher-ups. Sounds easy but there are factors like swallowing your pride, worrying about sounding/looking stupid, and the fact you don't really know yet if this job fits you even if it is temporary.

Posted: 12/14/09 at 12:57pmJane2, im not the only one in that store that does, a lot of other people that work there do it too. Also we have to deal with the rudest customers, they get angry if their coupons don't work. They also start cursing at us or call us stupid if the store doesn't carry what they are looking for. So to get back at them we make them go to the wrong places. I don't like to keep my mouth shut when a person calls me stupid or something else but I keep it shut at this job because I need the job. I just find other ways to get back at them, like most of us do

You find rude customers at every store. Heck, you find rude people everywhere. You are in the wrong line of work if you can't handle that. You should never, ever "get back" at customers. For all you know you're punishing a perfectly nice person because someone else was rude to you. That's not even close to being the right thing to do. I worked retail through college and I'd had my fair share of rude customers but I've also had some really great ones - including a young boy who told me he loved me and another women who would walk out of the store if I wasn't working. You're doing the wrong thing no matter how a rude customer behaves. Don't try to say it's okay because everyone does it.
I'm sorry if this seems harsh but it really gets on my nerves to see people treat a job so cavalierly when there are others with no jobs who would LOVE to have your job

Posted: 12/14/09 at 1:19pmI've heard minced words that question my intelligence from customers but never have I have been outright called dumb or stupid. This is retail, not some restaurant where you can take out your frustrations on a rude person's soup. Helping customers buy stuff from your work, unharmed and without a hitch is important. You get fired for treating customers poorly and no, they will not take your side unless you have somebody respectable vouching that you dealt with a psychopath. Did it ever occur to anybody that you were once the same customer you just want to slap? There are plenty of people who just need help, others who don't want to be bother cuz they know what they want or don't know better, and with the former it can be a great feeling to help those people out.

Posted: 12/14/09 at 1:20pmAgreed, Eris. If you don't know something, just be honest and point the person to someone who may know. Or if it is a general question that you should know an answer to, learn it.

Posted: 12/14/09 at 1:26pmDon't get me wrong, if a customer treats me right and isn't rude, ill treat them with respect and such. But if you call me stupid then F#*# you, im going to treat rude also. I treat people, the way they treat me. No one has a right to call anyone stupid, no matter how frustrated they are.

I was once told to go back to school to learn how to count because a customer had given me the wrong amount of change and I pointed it out to him.
At one store I worked at we had a very strict policy regarding bags. Customers could not have extras. Our bags were printed and people wanted extra to use as goody bags at their kid's birthday party or use them as a gift bag. People fought this policy every day and I had to stand my ground. I was yelled at, cursed at, etc. All because someone didn't want to put out the money for a gift bag or wrapping paper. I ususally would very politely point out that there was a dollar store on the upper level on the mall where they could get everything they needed. Why did they have to pay a dollar for a gift bag when we had free bags? But did I treat the next customer poorly because the person in front of them was rude? Of course not. Heck, a lot of the time if they saw someone giving me a hard time they would be extra nice to me.

When you're working you're the face of Macy's and an extension of their policies. You should never give back what you're getting. I'm not suggesting you don't stand up for yourself but be calm yet firm. If the situation escalates get a supervisor - never handle it on your own. All it takes is one person complaining that you told them to shut up and you're fired.

alxscrz2, you'd better hope the OP isn't one of your customers, because he'll go to management and have you fired. And then start a thread about it.
And on that note, I wonder what the OP will do about his rude customers?
This could be fun.

Posted: 12/14/09 at 1:48pmBtw some of our managers are the same. Like if a customer was looking for a certain item and we couldn't find it out front but there was some in the stock room. The manager would just say we don't have any left, just so they won't have to go in the stock room to get it.

Serioiusly, alxscrz2, if you can't handle the job, get another one. I've worked in customer service before and I understand how frustrating it can be, but you should put your personal feelings aside. If someone insults you, grin and bear it. You can cuss all you want at home, but when you're in Macy's you're an employee and should act as such. Grow a thicker skin or find new employment.

Posted: 12/14/09 at 1:55pmI don't curse at any customers because I don't want to get fired. I just send them to a random place in the store if they ask me where a certain thing is. Other employees and I talk about the customer where they leave but we don't curse at them

'that kind of Jewish stuff'
omg, lol... I can't believe you just left.
I went to Herald Square with my mom last week, and I was waiting for her to finish, so I asked an employee 'Do you sell Marc by Marc Jacobs here?' And she looked at me like I was speaking in another language and had to ask another employee. And then the other employee told me: 'we have never carried European designers'.
WTF lol.
Macy's has the worst customer service in all their stores at all times of the year.

I didn't mean to imply that you cussed at them, just advising you to vent your anger in private. But sending them to a random place is not very noble, either.
BTW: I worked at KB Toys in high school and it annoyed me when my boss would do that, too. Someone would ask for a specific toy and we'd just gotten a new shipment so I'd go out back and my boss would be like, "What are you doing?" ME: "I'm getting so-and-so." BOSS: "The new boxes haven't been opened yet. Just tell them we don't have it." I always felt like a heel doing that 'cause they'd be so hopeful when I'd say, "I think we just got a new shipment. I'll go check," only to return and say, "Sorry, we don't have it."
