There's no such thing as a "universally" anything-dog. It all depends on lineage and upbringing, just like in people. Not to mention the fact that most well-known breeds like Poodles, Goldens, Labs, etc, are often bred so much (and frequently in-bred) that their once legendary stability is rapidly decreasing.

Also, why is it that every president simply HAS TO have a dog? They're never around, the family is busy, the White House is undoubtedly hectic - it's not exactly an ideal place to raise a puppy.

I agree that poodles are the smartest breed. I have two yorkies myself because I love their little fiercesness. Shih tzu have human like hair and are good for people who dog allergies.

Those two adorable girls should each get a dog.

I'm considering purchasing an Italina Greyhound now.

My prediction is that the Obamas will go with a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier. They're hypo-allergenic, cute, friendly, and even have an 'American' variety.

As a proud and ecstatic owner of a Westie, I can vouch for their intelligence, their wonderful character and their friendliness and playfulness! And yes, they don't shed! And they look fabulous in photos !!!
