Where were you before you were conceived, Jane? Where was I? If we go to heaven after we die, where were we before we were born?
Oh, well, of course there was no me before I was conceived, so I couldn't be anywhere. You, on the other hand, may have been somewhere, LOL!!! just kidding. As for the soul, good question.
There's no mystery about how we arrive here so no reason to spend time wondering about that. After we die, well, there's no way to find out about that either, since no one's come back to let us know.
As for our soul - what exactly is it?
"You mention the planets and the stars, but everything is relative. The whole entire universe may just be a tiny particle in another organism which in turn is a tiny particle of another, and another."..
Agreed that may be true. That's easy for me to accept. My one question though is how did any universe start?
And before it started, there had to have been nothing.
Anyway, my burning question can never be answered.
Hope you had fun last night!

Reggie, go sit in the time out chair.
Scallion, I totally agree, these are really pertinent questions to me and sadly can never be answered. At least not in my lifetime.

"I believe that God is something within all of us, and it is the good that is in us."
ok, then what is the origin of evil that arguably resides in all of us as well?
I often find the evil more powerful and intriguing.

Here's what I think about the evil -two things:
1. It is the product of a sick mind - mental illness.
2. It is the result of an unbearably miserable life.

"...since no one's come back to let us know."
To be fair, there are numerous stories of those who have passed and then been revived seconds, or even minutes, later. The choice is yours to believe those accounts.

I know about all those stories. I believe them since they're all basically the same but I don't count that as dying and then coming back. I count them as approaching death's door, but not being ready to die.

Jane, of course you are right: science cannot currently tell us what existed before the Big Bang. Faith can try to tell us, but can't prove it.
But this guy…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_deGrasse_Tyson
…is head of the NYC Planetarium, and absolutely brilliant yet quite capable of explaining things so we non-scientists can understand. Dr. Tyson appears regularly on Bill Maher, Stephen Colbert, THE DAILY SHOW, etc., and I never watch him without learning something.
He can't answer your basic question, I don't think, because it lies outside the purview of science, but you can't go wrong giving him a try.
(Personally, I'm with best12bars' basic conception of God. I think we are within God, not outside of Him/Her, and God is All That Is. But that still doesn't tell us what form S/He took before the Big Bang. I do think I know this much: nothing in nature is static, so whatever form the universe used to take, it wasn't frozen in time or space.)

More of my insane thinking -okay, I imagine that before the sun, moon, or any planets were put in place, there had to be just the sky, or outer space. But then I try to imagine what was there before the outer space, because I keep thinking that there had to be that first day when outer space was even placed there.
But I can't! The mind cannot imagine nothing.

No, thank YOU, Jane! I didn't know Tyson has a new show coming up and will certainly watch.
As I'm sure you know, physicists have recently changed their minds as to whether the matter in the universe will eventually collapse in on itself (and perhaps explode all over again) and instead now think there's an invisible force that will keep the universe forever expanding. Long story short: they're very, very smart, but they don't know everything.
Stay posted!
They've also decided that what they thought was "a void" is actually full of dust, solar wind, other particles and various forces. So I think we might be best to just assume there is no vacuum in space.

Jane2 - If you are looking for a book to read than you could start with "A Universe From Nothing" by Lawrence M Krauss, unless you have already read that.
Also Prof. Brian Cox has a few books and has made a few TV shows regarding the universe but not sure if you will find what you are looking for.
Personally, I beleive God made us and I don't believe in evolution - otherwise we'd all be Broadway Stars, rather than some of us just writing about them.

I believe we are all part of god's gut bacteria, and when there are trolls on the internet, god gets diarrhea. That's why there are so many worse storms since the internet: god has diarrhea. I also believe before god, there were god's parents, God, Sr. And Mrs. God, and that is where the notion of godparents came from. Also, the first baptism was caused by Mrs. God sneezing.

Namo, I'm smirking and rolling my eyes. Here I thought I was going to learn something about you. Laertes!
Vera, that book sounds good, I'll look into it, and thanks!
Gaveston, that article about Tyson's show was from 2011 so who knows if it will happen?

Thanks, Jane. I watch a lot of Science Channel and the like (just find it interesting; I am certainly no expert). If I find a mention of a Tyson series I'll let you know.

The thing about God is that it is an unfathomable mystery.
He always was (had no beginning) and always will be.

That is why it is a mystery. Men have gone crazy trying to figure it out.We can ask him after we die how he did it
