I sing because I'm free. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me."
What keeps you going when times are tough? Today its a mustard seed for me. "If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed you can say to this mountain move, and nothing shall be impossible."

You are so cute and optimistic, tinny! I just want to give you a hug.
And then taint you...

I sing because I'm freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! (I wish)
The best rendition of this is from the Original Broadway Cast by Carolyn Bird. The London cast is much more complete (2cds) but I enjoy the vocals of Vivian Reed, Josephine Premise and Carolyn Bird much more.
ps: I was just listening to this last night!

sorry,my post was kinda totally off topic, hehe
wait - it's from a show? I thought it was an OLD gospel song, or spiritual of some sort - my mother is 78 and it's always been one of her favorite songs - what show is it from?
Oh - and sorrygrateful - thanks for that - and don't think for a moment that I'm not completely tainted in my own twisted way - but I do try to remain positive always!

It's an old song. But it was incorporated into Bubbling Brown Sugar.

I was inspired to start this thread because of a wonderful old book my mom sent me in the mail this week - it's called Move Ahead with Possibility Thinking and it's very well written, but probably wouldn't be appreciated by anyone who dislikes the occasional biblical quote.

19 years ago my mother sent me a book called Dianetics. I was having some problems and well...I read it up until the part where it said homosexuality went against human nature or something to that effect. I put it down, called my mom , thanked her for the book and never picked it up again.
My point is, no matter what, mothers are just trying to look out for their kids.
You're right about that - my mom knows I've been going through some rough times lately and she's a person of very strong faith - something I'm trying to strengthen within myself also - and since I've been wrestling with it, I find the quote about the mustard seed to be very helpful indeed.

Well, try to find a faith that doesn't condemn your essence. My GOD does not make mistakes.
Oh, I'm not talking about any particular religion - I'm talking about Faith in general - the faith that there's definitely a higher power out there watching over me and taking care of me. Sometimes I have it and sometimes I don't (today, I DO). I want the kind of strength my mom has - never doubting or questioning for a moment. It has nothing at all to do with religion. It has to do with Belief.
I thought it was from "I Sing!" -- the lyrics to the opening song are VERY similar....

and let's not forget that ETHEL WATERS sang HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW in MEMBER OF THE WEDDING. such a wonderful play and movie.
Wow, for those on here who know me pretty well, what a perfect thread for me!(I'm known to randomly break into happy song at any point...walking down the streets of the city, Lincoln Center Plaza, parking garages...no clue why my friends think I'm so crazy...)
Marc Shaiman (I believe) made a beautiful arrangement of it with Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount on the Sister Act 2 soundtrack.
cturtle - love that play and Ethel.
And Justice - is the rest of that CD worth listening to? I don't even remember seeing the film, so I have no recollection - but it sounds interesting.
redhot...I don't know. Oh Happy Day and Sparrow are two of my fave songs on that cd. I kinda like Joyful Joyful and Ain't No Mountain...but I'm not fond of the rest.

i knew i'd heard it somewhere! Sister act 2... amazing song!
Here's a quote from somewhere or other:
"I don't sing because I'm happy, I'm happy because I sing."
So I'm happy all the time because I'm ALWAYS singing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
