Mister Matt, I agree with your last post.
Spain is a beautiful country.
The best thing about Spain is that they have accepted that they are not a World power anymore, unlike the French who still seem to think they count for something.

MisterMatt, I've had to live through the skeevy years of the Clintons being in the White House. And since I live in NYC, I have to deal with "her whose not worth naming" as my senator.
I have to see the country I live in, which was created on a belief in God, slowly strip God out of every aspect of life.
My reality is that because of language in hate crime bills, I won't be able to go to church and hear a minister read the portions of the Bible that speak against homosexuality. So America is offering me freedom to practice my religion as long as it doesn't offend anyone else.
So it seems that while we have differing viewpoints, America isn't working for either one of us. My only problem is that there is no place better than America to go.

Do you find it difficult going out in public wearing your white robe and hood as well?

Gothampc - Well, if you're referring to Leviticus, it was overturned by Christians. If you're referring to the story of Lot and Sodom, it was about rape, not homosexuality and it condones prostitution of daughters as well as incest.
America was originally founded on freedom of religion, which means not just Christianity. But it won its independence on the idea of democracy, not religion.

Thank God! Because I've been having sex with my whore of a daughter for years! It's comforting to know that the Bible says it's okay.

The House of Representatives has voted to urge a conference committee to add "sexual orientation, gender and disability" to federal hate-crimes law. On Sept. 28, the House voted 213-186 to pass a procedural motion encouraging a conference committee to include the hate-crimes legislation in the final version of the Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 4200).
If a homosexual is sitting in church and the minister reads the portions of the Bible that condemn homosexuality, the language of this law allows that person to claim that a hate crime has been committed and that person can bring charges against the minister and the church.

I'm not gonna get into the whole homosexualtiy vs Christianity vs freedom of whatever debate.
The bottom line is this:
In this country, you're guaranteed the right to (pretty much) say what you want, pray to who (or what) you want, AND you have the right to cry foul when you're offended.
Problem is, people think that their right to cry foul (because they're offended) trumps other people's rights of religion and expression. That my friends, is bullshat.

"If a homosexual is sitting in church and the minister reads the portions of the Bible that condemn homosexuality, the language of this law allows that person to claim that a hate crime has been committed and that person can bring charges against the minister and the church."
I sincerely doubt that. There's a big difference between speaking out against something and encouraging or threatening bodily harm.
#38re: I've Made Up My Mind
Posted: 10/12/04 at 12:25pmPS - Do you really need to hear a minister read the portions of the Bible that condemn homosexuality? Is there simply not enough pleasure to be had in reading them yourself? And there is nothing in the hate crimes bill that prevents ministers from reading any portion of the Bible unless that somehow equates with actually committing a crime, of which reading aloud is not nor is it defined as such in the hate crimes bill. As a matter of fact, there is nothing in the Bible that literally states homosexuals should be beaten, terrorized or killed, so your point is moot.

Problem is, the Bible has been so mutilated by numerous translations and the VERY corrupt Catholic Church up to about the 17th Century, who knows WHAT the heck the thing is SUPPOSED to say.

RodneyK - That is the biggest problem with the fundamentalists who try to use the Bible as a guidebook for morality and politics. Which Bible do they use? Who decides which sections should be applied and which should be ignored. In a country boasting religious freedom, why would any President claim that its Constitution should be based solely on one interpretation of one religion? That doesn't sound very democratic to me. Nor does it sound very Republican, considering the foundation of the Republican party was to increase states' rights, yet Bush wants to take away the rights of the states to determine legality of same-sex marriage.
It's madness, I tell you! MADNESS!!

Yea, that's because back in the old days only members of the Priesthood knew how to read. That way they could keep the lowly common folk in their place.
Did ya know there were a LOT of people in the Priesthood that wanted Gutenberg executed for heresy for printing bibles (as opposed to having them hand copied by monks)?
#42re: I've Made Up My Mind
Posted: 10/12/04 at 12:46pmAnother problem with Christianity: nearly all denominations believe the other denominations to be incorrect. It's not enough being a Christian, but being the right kind of Christian. Just look at Ireland. They've been murdering each other for centuries, yet they are all supposed to be Christians. So who is right?
#43re: I've Made Up My Mind
Posted: 10/12/04 at 12:53pmChristianity has been used as a weapon for political and personal agendas since the early centuries of AD. You'd think we would have gotten wiser by now.

Excellent point Mister Matt.
I've recently been giving serious consideration to converting to Orthodox Christianity (The American Orthodox Church)
Basically because
1) They were NEVER part of the Catholic Church (unlike Protestants)
2) They don't answer to a 'Central See' Like the Catholics do. (The Bishop of Constantinople is merely considered the 'oldest' posistion within the religion, not the leader)
3) They don't care if your Babtist, Catholic, Methodist, or whatever.

Posted: 10/12/04 at 12:57pmMy uncle was once a minister for the American Orthodox Church, but is now an Episcopalian priest. That whole side of the family was originally very strict Irish Catholic, but even my rather zealous grandmother who is closing in on 90 years old has taken more liberal views than the Vatican. She invited Jarico and I over for dinner and simply adores him. My uncle has agreed to marry us in the US should it become legal. Not all devout Christians misinterpret the Bible. Only the ignorant ones.

Episcopalians are an intersting group. I'm going to make it a point to learn more about them.
Truth is I'd probably go Tibetian Buddist if it weren't for the no meat issue and the fact that it would be VERY against my heritage, which is not a good reason for everyone, but is a good one for me.
