I finally got it together to read your excellent article, Mark--descriptions of the progress of the disease take me right back to where I was during my father's journey: witnessing, helping when I could, feeling helpless when I couldn't help.
I was very moved by your writing and honored that you chose to share it with us. For what it's worth, I'm sure my father would have read it and said something along the lines of "He's one heckuva guy."
As for me, I'll just repeat this line of yours that struck me: "In the future, I may be in a state where I can't speak or write anymore, so I want to say it now: Thank you!"
All I'll add is: Keep writing.

Some upcoming films featuring characters with ALS: Hilary Swank plays a pianist diagnosed with ALS in “You’re Not You”.

And Eddie Redmayne plays Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything,” which I hope to see at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival.

My sister and I took the ice bucket challenge on my terrace in Prague in honour of my late aunty Jenny. We have donated to Motor Neuron Australia, as in Australia it is referred to as MND :)

I'm so happy to see what started out as a negative thread turn into something beautiful and inspiring. I'm glad it wasn't deleted.
Someone asked to see Stephen Hawkings' challenge?
His kids stand in for him.

Posted: 8/30/14 at 7:14pmI just read an article by a woman who's father has ALS. He needed a ramp built at his house and the ALS people said it was too expensive. Then after this challenge started, they called back and said with the influx of money they had gotten, they were going to pay for his ramp after all.
