MHO, one of the greatest pieces of writing and acting in modern film history. Could have been written yesterday (the late, great Paddy Chayefsky). Directed by Sidney Lumet. 1976. Peter Finch Rules!

Indeed...one of the finest movies ever.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

One of my all time favorites! I am surprised it has not been remade.Even though it was made in 1976,it feels very much like it was made in today's current political atmosphere.

Part of me says: YES! A remake IS in order.
The other part of me says: Why? It's perfect the way it is!

Of course, now I'm trying to pick a current cast.
(Death to anyone that says Julia Roberts.)

No remakes, please. BAMBOOZLED already paid homage to it.

Besides the current state of popular television is probably more ridiculous than what Hollywood could dream up anyway.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Just to be clear, I am NOT for a remake. It just seems with cable news today and ratings being priority over everything else,it almost begs to be remade.

Well, turns out about 5 years ago George Clooney was thinking about it. As a fan of "Goodnight and Good luck"I would rather see Clooney do this then say Joel Schumacher or Brett Ratner.

I hated this film in 1976. Really detested it. And when Beatrice Straight won an Academy Award over Piper Laurie, I almost went as crazed as Peter Finch does in the film. Anyway, I've never seen it, again. Perhaps I should give it another go? Although, I cannot imagine ever sitting through it, again. I wasn't alone either. We were double-dating, and all four of us hated it. To this day we bring it up as one of our worst movie-going experiences. But then, we detest STAR WARS, too.

I think the film is ridiculously brilliant and it captures this modern age where everything is indeed driven by ratings, advertisements, and ultimately money of course (though the money thing is not particularly exclusive to this age).
The screenplay is renowned for its pure brilliance and I just love the acting. You gotta be impressed with a movie that was able to win THREE acting Oscars! Peter Finch was good but I actually preferred William Holden, I think he has the less showy but ultimately more interesting role. Faye Dunaway has never been better, she owns the role, she's hilarious, sexy, and extremely evil. It's a very very cynical movie (that ending!) but it's so so good. I saw it a few months ago for the first time and just fell in love with it. It has aged extremely well.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

More scenes to savor, ray-andallthatjazz.

I think some people don't get that this film is as black comedy/satire as it can get. 44 yrs. old! I do remember that people in our surrounding apts. and bldgs. started screaming "I'm mad as hell".. one lovely afternoon. Hysterical.

(Really, who can argue w/this writing and directing?!)

(this last scene w/Bea Straight - wowee!!! -5 minutes on screen and brilliant, similar to Jane Alexander's perf. in All The Presidents' Men, another great 70's film.)

One of my top 10 all time faves.

Chayefsky's script is incredibly astute, passionate, subtle, and all around remarkable.

The performances are all iconic.

Simply a masterpiece, imo of course.

NETWORK is the best film of the 1970s. Each year it gets more and more relevant; just look at the Fox News Channel for proof. And how sad that ROCKY won Best Picture and Director over this masterpiece.

Poor Faye peaked with this; her only good perf after this was BARFLY in 1987.
Do you know what happens when you let Veal Prince Orloff sit in an oven too long?

A fine film in pretty much every way, even if all the characters do start to sound alike after a while. Howard Beale's great rants are all the more frightening for the way in which they have all come true.

These words from the film keep coming back to me, as this country dies a slow painful death:

"What is finished is the idea that this great country is dedicated to the freedom and flourishing of every individual in it. It's the individual that's finished. It's the single, solitary human being that's finished. It's every single one of you out there that's finished."

This is one of my all time favorite films as well. Not only did this film see the what would become of News Television. But also saw a vision of reality television. Wasn't the faye Dunaway character working on a series following the patti hearst kidnappers? My favorite part is Ned Beatty's speach to Peter Finch.

I remember reading Lumet and Chayefsky, both TV veterans, were both disenchanted with the direction the TV medium was taking. Some of Network's biggest champions now proclaim it as a film that correctly predicted the modern age of media (which I agree with) are also some of those nostalgic for the era that Lumet and Chayefsky warned was vulnerable, which I find pretty interesting since I think the movie that idealizes the news medium of that era would be All The President's Men. Then again, way beyond my time but I find it interesting that those two particular films were out the same year.

ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN and NETWORK are two very interesting pictures of the decline of the U.S.

In ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, the news industry (specifically print journalism) is the main watchdog against government corruption and wrongdoing.

In NETWORK, of course, the news industry (specifically television) is the main accessory to the forces of cultural corruption and dehumanization.

Perhaps it was that we saw a string of films, including CARRIE and ROCKY, within a two week period, and NETWORK just seemed dull, by comparison. I really need to give it another look. My love for both CARRIE and ROCKY has not diminished over the years.
