Audition materials are now available at illinoistheatrefest.org! I know there's several Illinois kids on here, who's auditioning?
Who is this being arranged through? Because I don't think the rights are going to be available.
Once our National Cast performs, they said they will consider making the rights available but chances are likely they will continue with another Broadway Tour postponing the release for quite some time.
There's nothing on the All-State website to suggest that the show might not go on, considering the All-State production is planned far, far in advance of the festival dates. I was quite surprised when I found out that the show would be Hairspray, for the same reasons you are. Illinois All-State is not a shifty rights-skirting organization though, I worked with them last year and they are true professionals. I can't imagine them announcing the show months in advance and putting out audition materials having not gotten permission to perform.
Rights are restricted, but available to certain organizations.
Basically, youth groups can only do it if MTI knows it will be good. With a state company, you know it will be pretty good.
i want to, but i'll be gone for auditions,
(i think.) =[
I was at 08 Theatre Fest. Who else was? They said on Thanksgiving, they got the call with the rights!

I was at Theatrefest 08, playing in the pit for Parade. I heard around Thanksgiving that the 2009 show would be Hairspray, but we weren't told whether it was confirmed or not. We were also told that Jason Robert Brown would come see Parade, but nope...(well, he really was going to and couldn't make it, but we were still sad) Anyway. The show next year really is Hairspray, so whoopee! Following something like Parade, it'll be an interesting experience.
If I saw him, I would have gone F*CKing crazy! Yes, How can you go from a show so dark to a show so colorful and fun?
Did anyone go to the Hairspray audition informational meeting at theatrfest? Being in the show, we had no opportunity to attend workshops. Any info from the meeting you'd like to pass on?
I did go! It wasn't anything but them talking about the show, doing a slide, the production team talking about themselves. They did tell the story of how they got the rights. here is as much as I remember (my memory sucks)
The director couldn't decide what show to do. Then she saw Hairspray the day it opened. She then called (the assitant director?) and told them that the show has to be Hairspray. And finally the day after Thanksgiving they got the call saying they got the rights.
Sorry for my bad memory.
Did they give out any tips for the audition itself?
I'm sorry, I don't remember. I'll ask the people I went with and let you know.
well then good luck with the show! be ready to pass out after Nicest Kids in Town and You Can't Stop The Beat. They didn't nickname that song You Can't Stop To Breathe for nothing. and Nicest Kids should be made "Most Exhausted Kids In Town" according to Marc Shaiman. hahahah.
I am doing You Can't Stop The Beat for swing choir and she made it too easy. I want a challenge!!!
Come try our national cast choreography =0
It is NON-STOP with flips and a million leaps and it feels like it NEVER ENDS lol. hahaha
but its an amazing show to perform in. You're just exhausted after every show. and i mean exhausted. I've done Cats before so i know how exhausting some shows can get but by far, Hairspray takes the cake on that one.
double post! whoops.
Can't wait! Hopefully the audition won't consist of too many flips and leaps, cause those I cannot do very well. There's several kids from my school auditioning, and we're all bummed that one of the rehearsal weekends is during tech week for our fall play. Sigh. It would be so worth it to miss out on the play to do Hairspray though.

You've been in it before, so when do they send you information back after you've summitted your application?
Yeah, I was just wondering about that. Since it's a different director every year, it must vary, but I remember getting a response from them around this time or it might have been early June last year.
Did anyone audition yesterday? Mine's next Saturday morning.

I auditioned last Saturday and even got a callback!
It was a really fun experience.
If there's anything you want to know to ease your nervousness just let me know!
Out of town next saturday!
Hey Lovin, glad your audition went well! I'm nervous about the dance portion...how was it?

Thanks!
Yeah--I was extremely nervous for the dancing too--as I have not had ANY dance training and well..I'm a guy. However..the dance was not hard and the lady was very nice, upbeat, and friendly along with EVERYONE else. Seriously..they made everyone feel so welcome and comfortable. Pretty much you get about 15 mins to learn the dance..she goes over every move slow and then she speeds it up. The end tempo is quite fast. And the dance is to the song "You Can't Stop the Beat" (they use the movie version). You then audition in groups of three and get two times to do it.
Also..for the singing portion it is only YOU and about four other directors! It is not in front of a large group or anything. Accompanist is perfect and nice as well.
For callbacks..you do the dance again (by memory) with three other people..then they hand out the sheet music that they want you to sing..and then you do some reading scenes from the show. This is in front of ALL the directors/producers/anyone and ALL the other callback kids..so it's a little more intense. However, as I've already said, they make everyone feel so comfortable!
I'm sure you'll do fine! and GOOD LUCK!
