My lil' bro was obsessed with this show. One time he even made me watch a SAILOR MOON marathon they had on Cartoon Network. I was surprised to actually like it, though I found Serena a bit too whiny/cry-baby for a superhero.
How did Tuxedo Mask come into it?
Sailor Moon musical?! OH MY!
Well Sailor Moon is probably the most single handedly mistreated anime to ever air in america.
They censored it, cut it for time, abandoned plots, were inconsistant with voice artists and story, changed companies so once again everything changed. It was mistreated and inconsistant.
I only watch the japanese episodes anyhow. So it doesnt matter much to me.
The show is not on US tv anymore, nor Japanese tv.
200 episodes were made over 5 season.
America released 1 1/2 seasons. and then several years later finished the second half of Season 2, followed by more years of waiting for seaosn 3 & 4. Season 5 was never dubbed.
I dont recommend the American DVDs as they are hacked and poorly recorded, and teh american DVDs of the japanese version were dubbed from low quality tapes.
The only true DVDs are the Region 2 versions from Japan (and I think Italy) that are higher quality than the tapes they gayve the US to dub. Only problem is they are Region 2 and not subtitled.
3 theatrical movies were made, a live action tv show was produced and musical adaptations that were produced in Japan for more than 12 years.
As you can see i know a lot about Sailor Moon, and could go on and on and on
I'm not sure what the region thing means but it sucks that they're not subtitled.
Well, I guess its okay because I wanted to learn Japanese anyway.
well that kinda sucks for me since I don't speak Japanese.
But did the series come to a satisfactory conclusion?
I hate when they don't renew a show and they never resolve any of the stroylines.
I also started a Resident Evil screenplay when I was playing the very first game.
It was just like the game, too.
I love the movies, but they're sucky adaptations.
LOVED Sailor Moon, even if I was watching the awful badly-dubbed Americanized version. That WAS sixth grade for me. Which, in retrospect, makes the anticlimaz of my coming out a little less surprising.
region 2 means it won't play on an American made dvd player.
This is going to be really, really dumb, but does the brand have anything to do with it?
We play DVDs on our PS2.
It did.
I mean the show could have literally gone on forever. With different villains every season. and the stage musicals actually did do that. Had original plots etc...
I should menton it was based off a manga/comic. Which are slightly different from the anime TV series.
And what was great about Sailor Moon - was even though it was a comic and cartoon - you could see the characters growth through the seasons. The animation became stronger thus the characters matured, and the voice actresses were able to mature their voices.
I always kind of felt bad for the other girls. Some of them were MUCH more badass than whiny li'l Sailor Moon. Why did she get to be in charge?
that's not a dumb question nits.
Sadly, region 2 dvds only play on machines that are coded for region 2 (Europe, Asia) so your PS2 still only plays region 1 dvds.
The system was designed to cut down on illegal copying of material.
I Must add that the ending of the 200th episode is much like teh beginning of the series:
"I'm Usagi Tsukino, 14 years old, I'm in eith grade. I'm clumsier than others and a bit of a crybaby. Thats a bout it."
Last thing Usagi says, ep 200:
"I'm Usagi Tsukino, 16 years old, I'm in my first year of high school. I'm a bit rash and a crybaby, but I'm actually an agent of love and justice pretty Soldier Sailor Moon!"
(thats when Mateo cries)
I should add that the ages and school years are off from Comic to Cartoon. Its complicated - I wont go into it. :)
And changing codes is impossible, right?
I think I liked Sailor Mercury the best. I think. That's just going off their pictures.
(Besides Tuxedo Mask, of course. I thought he was soooooo sexy.)
you can't change codes, but if you want to you can buy a region 2 player. I think amazon UK sells them. But then you have to always order dvds from overseas b/c no one in america sells them (obviously).
I know several people who have both.
There are Region Free DVD players out there, and I am pretty sure PS3 is region free.
oh and Tazzy, Sailor Uranus and Neptune are a lesbian couple.
and there are a few gay villains.
Dont ya love it?
Do you know how much a PS3 costs? And we just bought the PS2 a year ago.
We'll wait a little longer.
"oh and Tazzy, Sailor Uranus and Neptune are a lesbian couple.
and there are a few gay villains. "
Only in Japan. Gay characters in mainstream America targeted for kids? I don't think so.
Yeah, in fact for the US release...
all gay villains became female characters, and Uranus and Neptune became cousins.
yeah.
"Uranus and Neptune became cousins."
I guess incest is okay
wow, that's really progressive.
Are Japanese attitudes about homosexuality that relaxed?
It was still SO obvious, though. I barely even knew what lesbians were, but even I knew there were huge air-quotes around "cousins."
lol scott!
Hey, how was the roommates bday celebration?
yes and no.
If you want to read up on the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_Japan
It certainly seems that way, but there is still prejudice and discrimination.
There is a great presence of homosexuality in poppular culture.
and most gay material in anime and manga are directed at female audiences.
Its a very strange yet fascinating topic.
Oof... from what I remember, it was a lot of fun! Unfortunately, one of the memory cards the roommate used during the party disappeared at some point during the night, so no one really knows how fun the first half of the night was.
We somehow ended up with almost half the alcohol still intact (thank god for jungle juice!), so we're having another party next weekend to use it up! We're such generous people. Maybe this time we'll invite someone I actually want to hook up with so it'll be even more fun.
