Do tell.
Whew! You had me nervous there for a sec.
I just got back from my family's newly renovated shack upstate, and it's BEAUTIFUL. I'm so excited to make all my friends make the trek up there for parties this summer.
Taz, my sister and mom were down by you this weekend for a soccer tournament!
Scott, I just spent the day up at my friend's pimp cottage, having a relaxing day and playing Baldersash (which I am the king of). We were also planning a July 4th party (which isn't a Canadian holiday...which is part of the gimmick). They want to do classic Hamptons, all decked out in Lacoste and Hilfiger. We'll go sailing. I'll get drunk and set off fireworks. Good times.
Also I just found out a buddy of mine will be the new Melchior on the Spring Awakening tour. And one of my besties is waiting to hear back about originating a role in the new Phantom sequel. I am so lucky to have such talented friends.

Hello all... how's everyone doing?
I'm still FURIOUS about prop 8.
I hate those freaking religious cockroaches who have the audacity to take away someone else's rights. Eff them and eff their stupid notion of "god".
I AM PISSED!
Rant over, but my anger is not.
Sam, where were they? In Va Beach?

Tazber mate calm down. What's happened? I haven't seen anything on the news so you're going to have to explain it to me... sounds ****ty though! Keep your chin up mate!!
edit- Just done some quick reading and am disgusted. Just cements my opinion more that organised religion is responsible for a hell of a lot of the problems in this world!
Googles,
The great state of California granted gays the civil right to legally marry back in November.
Yesterday they rescinded that right.
We are officially second class citizens.

i edited my above post... i'm gutted for you mate Sorry to you all. Keep your chin up though (sends virtual hug) x
thanks buddy.
We will overcome.....
Actually, in lame man's terms, the California Supreme Court legalized gay marriages last June, then in November the lovely citizens of California voted to ban it (Prop, and yesterday the Court upheld the ban but did not overturn previous same-sex marriages. Meaning those who'd gotten married before the November 5 elections could stay married, but no more gays can marry from now on.

I see Stagey has deleted his post. Does that mean you're no longer interested in my trip? I was just about to sit down and tell ya'll about it again. Okay. I'll do it anyway.
Day One: The first thing we planned on doing was the Carnegie Hall tour, but we arrived in the city earlier than planned so we had a little time. We headed over to the giant Toys 'R Us in Times Square where I decided that I *had* to ride the Ferris Wheel. We told the guy that it was my 25th birthday, so he let us pick which car we wanted to ride in (which he's not supposed to do) and then he offered to take our picture with our own camera (which he's not supposed to do). I chose the My Little Pony car, and we had an amazing ride. It was quite the way to kick off our trip. Then, we did the Carnegie Hall tour. While the tour itself was a little info-heavy and a bit boring, the end was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life. Why? They let me sing in Carnegie Hall. Me! Sing! In Carnegie Hall! (My two BFFs also volunteered to sing so we could "show off the acoustics of the hall.) I guess this is a normal occurrence at the end of each tour, but we didn't know that going in, so it was incredible. I was shaking the whole time. That night, we saw 9 to 5, which was also pretty darn spectacular. I went in with rather low expectations, and I was heartily entertained. The book was hilarious. The songs were wonderfully catchy. And the actors were just genius. This show was the favorite of the trip, just because it was so surprisingly good.
Day Two: We started off the day by wandering through Central Park for a few hours and then I had to go have "family time" with Hub, his brother, and his brother's wife. We walked around Soho & the West Village, and while it was nice to get out of Times Square for once, I'm kind of sad that I had to leave because I missed Next to Normal. We weren't planning on seeing it, but then decided at the last minute that we needed to. Of course, I couldn't get out of family plans, so I missed out. Boo. But I did get to eat some spectacular food at Mesa Grill (Bobby Flay's restaurant), so that was cool. That night was West Side Story, which was another surprise. I've never been able to get into the movie or the cast recording, but the Spanish really intrigued me. I'm so glad it did. I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of the changes they made for this production, but I'm glad they made them. I've always been troubled by the lack of realism (I guess you could call it) in WSS, but this version really affected me. I'm not very emotional, but this show almost made me cry three times. That really says something for the show. Afterward, we had dinner in Times Square where I stopped some sailors to take a picture with us (see Fleet Week thread). They were very nice, although at least two of them wanted to be my new boyfriend.
Day Three: First stop: the Met, where I proceeded to geek out over REAL medieval arms and armor. Even though I'm not planning on being a medievalist for my job anymore (more on that later, if anyone cares), this was still way cool. After that, we saw Billy Elliot, where I was completely underwhelmed. I did like a lot of what I saw on stage (the dancing was incredible, of course), but overall I didn't see what the big deal was. The songs were mostly forgettable and I didn't see the point of some scenes at all (the whole song the grandma sings, anyone?). We bought tickets to this one because it was all hyped to be the Tony winner this year, but after seeing it for myself, I'm not so confident anymore. After a quick stop in Times Square to revel in walking in the middle of the traffic-free streets, it was time for In the Heights. I've seen this one before and just couldn't pass up the chance to see it again. Despite having understudies for SIX of the featured roles, this show just doesn't disappoint. Robin de Jesus was, by far, my favorite actor of the night. Although I was thrilled to see Javier Munoz as Usnavi. I hope he goes on tour, since I'm sure Lin-Manuel Miranda is a bit too busy right now. Either way, I'mma hafta see ITH at least 3 times when it hits Chicago. There's nothing quite like watching 50-year-old white women in the audience bouncing their heads along to those beats.
And then I came home. Roger definitely has it right in RENT when he says, "You'll miss New York before you could unpack." Word.

P.S. Sorry that was so long, but I'm going to cross-post it on my LJ, and it was easiest to just write the long version once.
Wow! That sounds like an amazong time Mauri! Thanks for the run-down!

Oh, what the hell, you just had a birthday. Consider it a belated present: Why don't you wanna be a "medievalist" anymore?

Well, I always wanted to go into editing, but then decided to go the academic route my senior year of undergrad b/c of a prof's encouragement. Now, after a year of Ph.D. school, I freaking hate academia and want to return to the original plan. The only part of my program I enjoy is working at the writing center, which is essentially editing. So now I'm sending resumes out like a mofo and am hoping to drop out of Ph.D. school by fall term. Not the best economic climate to be switching careers, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
But in other news, I just got a summer job at Build a Bear yesterday, so that should be fun in the meantime.
Why, miss seeing my face?
I commented on a thread about a certain policy change by a certain company I work for, and didn't want to be all "HI I'M A SHILL" and... well, it made more sense in my head. I'll put a new one up soon.
Second page? I think not!
How's everyone doing on this fine, sunny day?
scott, has anyone ever told you you could be Jared Padalecki's younger brother in that pic?
Hahah besides you, no!
I just cleaned my room and found seven dollars in ones in the pockets of my pants. I'm rich!
