A friend of mine recently complained to me that TalkinBroadway.com which was one of the first and best known Broadway chat boards seems to be slowing down -- posts are fewer, news less up to date. Why is that while other boards (including BWW) seem to be growing more popular?

I for one never liked the format of their chat board. BWW is definitely more accessible. Are there a lot more Broadway themed message boards then there used to be?

Any thoughts?

I never liked Talkin' Broadway.

Back when the Broadway.com message boards were being shut down, several posts were made saying "Come join a new Broadway community" and linked to BWW.

BWW was an instant success - everyone just flocked over here.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Well one thing I respect TalkinBroadway for is that there are some very intelligent posters on there. Lots of knowledgable people, but I do think the energy is nasty over there. Lots of bitter queens.

There's definitely an ATC slowdown, which I attribute to the summer. There are other theater chatrooms, but ATC and BWW are the only two focusing on Broadway that i'm aware of.
After posting on both for awhile, you notice the differences and distinct personalities of each.

When i see messages from a fellow BWW'er there, i want to give a virtual wave. We may date other message boards, but BWW is our main squeeze.

ATC seems a lot more reserved than BWW. I hardly spend anytime at ATC, but I refer to Talkin' Broadway for news rather than BWW. But BWW Boards OWN.

I never used it because when I've tried to sign up for ATC, they've told me that they discriminate against AOL users.

That's so true. Sometimes I search for something and one of the first links is to a thread in which I was part of the discussion. It's kinda wierd actually.

Have you confused the websites?

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I've been on ATC fairly longer than BWW, though I lurked on here for quite some time. One of the biggest differences is that you must be 16 to be on ATC (I learned that the hard way). On the other hand, I remember a while ago there was a thread here on BWW started by a 10 year old. That's fine, but that usually means that there are bound to be more, how do I put this, "simpler" threads. Not that they're all "simple," but every now and then, it'll happen.

In fact, there was a mini discusion about the two boards on ATC a couple days ago. Someone was asking for something, and another poster told them to ask it on BWW - it's quicker, then explained that they use BWW for quick info, but ATC for more insight.

Another thing is that ATC is strictly theatre chat. No "off-topic" board, no avitars, no markups, and anything that's considered a "poll" is deleted ASAP.

I love BOTH ATC AND BWW, but lately I've been coming to BWW a lot more often because things are posted a lot faster.

And as far as getting nasty, it gets nasty over here a lot more often, but when it's bad at ATC, it's BAD. You should have seen a thread last year about someone who was offended by Assassins. And there's not much love for Lloyd Webber or especially Frank Wildhorn.
