In case you thought the Republican party was coming to it's senses, Politico has a jaw-dropping story on why Primary voters are clamoring for Rick Perry to get in the race, while rank-and-file party members see him as “Will Ferrell doing a George W. Bush imitation” according to a republican bigwig.
-Multiple former Hutchison advisers recalled asking a focus group about the charge that Perry may have presided over the execution of an innocent man — Cameron Todd Willingham — and got this response from a primary voter: “It takes balls to execute an innocent man.”
-Among Perry supporters, the case for the governor is clear: In an election focused on jobs and the economy, Perry has presided over more job growth than any other governor — an issue that resonates all over the map. (Unmentioned is the fact that Texas did well during the economic slump ONLY because it's economy revolves around OIL and the price of oil was through the roof for most of the recession)
-“If he’s the nominee, the first thing the White House is going to do is make an issue of secession.” (Really? You think?)

Posted: 8/4/11 at 11:48amKarl Rove's playbook lives on: He's always insisted you attack your opponent's biggest strength ("John Kerry is a war hero? No he's a liar!"). Now apparently, you should lead with your weakness ("Anyone can execute criminals! I executed an innocent man! I'd like to see Barack Hussein do that!")

Rick Perry is leading an event this weekend (I think) called "The Response", which is promoting Christianity-first, God's got all the answers, no other religions needed, etc. It's featuring zealots like Hagee, whose views on Catholicism are well known.
Bottom line: Perry would be the death of any GOP ticket.

Posted: 8/4/11 at 1:13pmPerry will be the Fred Thompson of this race. In late, no impact, out early. And John Hagee and Bryan Fischer alone will provide ample soundbites at this event to help make sure that's the case.

I'm still not sure how well evangelicals play with the general public, though. I really don't remember Bush getting super-Christ-y evangelical until well after he was elected.
