I'll be up in NYC this weekend and was looking for a good Italian restaurant. It doesn't necessarily have to be in the theatre district either. Thanks!

Becco is a good choice.
So is Trattoria Del Arte on 7th Avenue between 56th and 57th opposite Carnegie Hall. They have a Bolognese sauce that will bring a happy tear to your eye.
I wasn't that impressed with Becco. My friends thought we were just there on an off night because they always had a great experience. The service was great. My wife and I each got the Sinfonia di Pasta, which is a great value, as it's all you can eat. Two had no meat and we declined the third, telling them we were vegetarians. Soon, they came around with a skillet of the third pasta they had created meat-free. I just didn't find anything spectacular about the pastas. The friends who took us said they were usually much better.
A couple of weeks ago, we went to Trattoria Trecolori on West 47th. It was wonderful. There were five of us, and everyone loved their meals, which ranged from fish to veal to filled pasta. I highly recommend it.
Dottie, I'll be in the city for the day on Saturday with my sister and brother-in-law. This is on our list; a new market, with restaurants, by Lidia and Mario. www.eataly.com

Yes, it's a tourist trap, but the food at Carmine's is delicious.
Becco was excellent when I went, too.
Or, if you want to venture outside of the theater district, Little Italy has a ton of wonderful restaurants and dessert places.
Thanks, everyone. I now have a nice list to select from.
I'll second Trecolori if you want something in the Theatre District. I also like Pietrasanta and Puttanesca on 9th Ave.
I've only eaten at Carmine's once. I had no problem with the food per se, but it's definitely not a place to go if you're a party of two. Everything is family style, so unless you and your companion can eat an entire lasagna by yourselves, you'll waste a lot of money and food.
Carmine's is delicious but the portions are ridiculous. If it is just you, expect to have a bunch of leftovers. Even if you are in a group of a few people, order for one.
Definitely Trattoria Trecolori. I'm craving it right now.
I'll 4th Trecolori have been several times and have always been a happy camper! Save room for dessert!
I also liked Carmine's, but only go if you have a decent sized group.
Pazza Notte on 6th Avenue and 56th street has pretty decent Italian food, but the real draw is the 2 for 1 martini deal they have.
I'll agree with Trattoria Trecolori as a good theater district option. My mom and I were there last week, and it was warm, inviting, and reasonably priced and portioned. I had tried to get a reservation at Carmine's, but based on having stepped in there and seen the mammoth portions and large crowd waiting for tables, I'm glad we ended up at Trecolori.

Hey, chikfila... I hear you don't like the gays. What's that about?!
I ate last night at Don Giovanni (44th btwn 8 and 9th closer to 9th on south side) and it was really great! Better than Carmines, that's for sure.
On the UES, I love Antonucci on 81st just west of 3rd, and Cafe Buon Gusto on 77th btwn 2nd and 3rd.
I really enjoyed Scalini Fedeli when I was there a few years back. It is at 165 Duane St. BICE Ristorante is my favorite.
