He apparently reached his breaking point on Flight 1052 when a passenger tried to get a bag from the overhead compartment and it clocked Slater on the head, cops said.
Why does the article leave out that the man who was trying to get the bag from the overhead was doing it while the plane was still moving?
According to the first report:
"One passenger got out of his seat to fetch his belongings from the overhead compartment before the crew had given permission. Mr. Slater instructed the man to remain seated. The passenger defied him.Mr. Slater approached and reached the passenger just as the person pulled down the luggage, which struck Mr. Slater in the head. Mr. Slater asked for an apology. The passenger instead cursed at him."
What he did was crazy, but why do they leave out the details that show that the passenger was crazy as well?
For the record, I hate people who get up and get their luggage before the little ding-dong.
I hate even more people who recline their seats during take-off and landing.
And I REALLY hate people who continue to use their cell phones and music players after the flight attendant says to turn them off.
I don't admire what this guy did, but I could easily see myself doing the same--or worse.

You're right, PJ: those details were left out of the initial reports.
I'd still prefer a little more self-control from the people partially responsible for my safety on a plane, but you have to admire his panache.

See, I think he looks like a spoiled twit. I don't admire anything about what he did.
There are people who put up with a lot more for a lot less and don't act childish when they have a bad day.
I'm not saying I don't feel for him, no one wants to deal with assholes, but if this is what set him off I don't want to be anywhere near him when he finds out he can't collect unemployment.

Posted: 8/10/10 at 12:36pmI had worked customer service for 12 years and can understand it. I'm not saying I agree with it, but I get it. It gets to a point when dealing with Assholes non stop every day all day, where something is just going to be the breaking point. We've gotten to a point in our society where, since the customer is ALWAYS right, it means they are allowed to treat people like shlt with no consequences and get whatever they want. People can only put up with so much of that before they'll rightfully say "ENOUGH". Again, it can be done in a much more graceful way but... I get it.

I understand it's not easy, but dealing with assholes like that is the job. If you can't do it, go do something else.

He had flair...illegal flair but flair nottheless.
Reminds me of when I was laid off from a previous job. While I was cleaning out my desk and instead of putting all of my contacts in the dumpster behind our building I put them in our neighbor's dumpster. I didn't have a chute to slide down so it was the best I could do.
ETA: I also didn't throw the papers out publicly because that would have defeated the purpose of putting them in someone else's dumpster.

Mr. Turman, of the Legal Aid Society, offered an account of the flight, JetBlue 1052 from Pittsburgh, that he said justified Mr. Slater’s actions. He told reporters that on the ground in Pittsburgh, a female passenger had been verbally and physically abusive to Mr. Slater when he intervened as she squabbled with a male passenger over access to the overhead luggage compartment.
“The woman initially at Pittsburgh slammed the overhead into his head,” Mr. Turman said of Mr. Slater.
A passenger on the flight, Greg Kanczes, said that he saw a large, fresh-looking gash on Mr. Slater’s forehead at the beginning of the flight. “It was about an inch-and-half long, and it was a big red mark or cut,” Mr. Kanczes said by phone Tuesday. “There was no bandage.”
In previous accounts offered by the authorities, Mr. Slater’s main altercation with the passenger had come at the end of the flight, not the beginning, with the passenger pulling a bag out of the overhead compartment that struck Mr. Slater in the head.
Meanwhile, in an interview on the celebrity-news Web site TMZ, a woman who says she was married to Mr. Slater in the 1990s and remains friendly with him said that she talked to Mr. Slater’s ailing mother after his arrest Monday. The woman, Cynthia Susanne, said that Mr. Slater’s mother told her that Mr. Slater said that the passenger had “maliciously” pulled the compartment door down to hit Mr. Slater in the head, but that the altercation had occurred at the end of the flight.

This may be Seattle urban legend, but I remember hearing about some corporation that was downsizing an entire floor of a department. The deal was, they would fire everybody, hire new people for cheaper. But in the interim, the entire floor would be basically vacant for a few months while the company restructured. Apparently, one of the people laid off knew about this and left them a bit of a gift. A large Pike Place Market trout closed in one of the desks. Rotting. For months.
Not as stylish as grabbing a beer and going down the slippy slide, but still...

For real. No one assaults a flight attendant and is allowed to remain on the plane.
And why would he quit? If what the passenger did was truly that egregious then he should have reported her and had her deplaned. The only one he ended up hurting was himself.

We hear about people all the time being taken into custody for getting out of hand on airplanes. Surely slamming an overhead bin door on a flight attendant's head, refusing to stay seating when the plane in motion and cursing them out is cause enough.
