Again, it's not his actions. None of his "supporters" defend his actions.
It's his actions as metaphors for what we experience in our lives, but what we are too smart or good or sane or well-behaved--or frightened or repressed--to do ourselves.
The Daily Beast blogger elaborates on the Sully reference:

People kept making Sully comparisons yesterday and apart from them both working on planes I don't really get it.
Also, can someone contexualize this comment on the Daily Beast article?
A immature "white" homosexual is being seen as a hero in a "white' bisexual culture; it seems Europeans are trying harder and harder by the day to adopt the behaviors over their classical cultures? ("Grease", Rome) Go figure.
Forget the Jesus or Jewey scam.....their adopt homosexuals heros again freely and promote as the best,,,,,,Black people are you not seeing through this?

Omar Thornton is the gunman who killed himself and 8 others at a beer distributor's last week in CT.

It doesn't have to mean his job was awful. Anyone who has ever had to bite their tongue while being berated under the guise of "the customer is always right" is fantasizing about this.
I like my job. I don't like having to be pleasant and helpful to customers who are rude and verbally abusive and not deserving of my help or even attention. Thankfully they have been few and far between in my case, but there are too many rude people who relish the fact that they can say anything they want and people in the service industry have to nod and smile and take it.

I work the phones at a local democratic campaign office, and just today I was told to go to hell, f-ck myself, and drop dead. And mind you, I had to APOLOGIZE to these people because the congressman wasn't doing what they liked. What I wouldn't give to talk back to just one of them. I guess if you take too much of it you're bound to snap sometime.

Wow. Comparing Slater to Captain Sullenberger? Not in a million years.
Sorry. I can't get behind the hero worship for this guy. As I wrote in my earlier post, I understand how this situation could resonate for people, but, most people work in jobs that have varying degrees of frustration, and most of us are able to keep our professional wits about us during these situations.
I'll bet there are plenty of people who would be happy to work his 'crappy' job...
In the end, what disgusts me is how RUDE our society has become. People think the rules don't apply to them. What has happened to us?

I've worked in retail/sales for a few years and I know what it's like to just want to strangle the other person.
I've also wanted to strangle fellow employees who don't know how to offer good service to customers.

Yes, and they will now have a chance to take the position!
I work with so many people who are miserable at what they do. They complain all of the time and, when they are working, they act as if it's a bother to them.
I often think to myself, "If you don't like the job so much, why don’t you just quit?"
This guy did it! And he decided, after his parents were dead and dying that maybe, he wanted or needed a change.
He’s become a hero for just doing what almost everyone has wanted to do, at one point of another.
And he’s doesn’t seemed bothered by it at all, which makes it even more sweet. It’s as if a giant weight is off his shoulders.

I think the 'heroic' action here (if we want to call it that) is the fact that this guy didn't haul off and punch the woman in the face after being assaulted. I like to think that I would never respond to violence with violence. But, if I snapped, I can't actually say I'd react that way. I also think that we (all of whom has a sense of the dramatic) appreciate the genuinely remarkable theatrics. For the writers amongst us, the metaphor of sliding the emergency escape slide to freedom is also just too delicious.
And though I understand the 'be grateful to have a job in this economy' mindset, it really can be damaging. I let myself be treated really SH*Ttily at work for the last few months because of that very phrase. Finally, I got fed up. I didn't quit. I just took another job within the company so as not to work with those who abused me. Of course, now I'm getting some harrassing e-mails from the old boss...all of which are being documented...just in case. I'm not litigous. But a nice settlement every once in a while never hurts a girl.

Posted: 8/12/10 at 1:04pmThose must be the homophobic passengers. They interviewed a woman this morning on NBC news who said he was very socialable, even was talking with her baby. She did notice the mark on his head at the time. They did not see any of the drama that occured.
