Did you know Norma was Eva Peron's childhood idol? The young Eva Duarte admired Norma's ability to escape the poverty of her youth and make it big in the movie business, and snatching a powerful husband to boot.
Someone should have slapped Eva Peron in the face and told her, "Get back in that room and congratulate Hattie!"
"Get back in that room and congratulate Hattie" is going to be my catch phrase for years.
LOL
I just asked a friend about it, and he said the story is absolutely true ... only he says it wasn't Norma Shearer, it was Irene Selznick (as in Mrs. David O.) who went out after her, slapped her, and told her to "Get back in that room and congratulate Hattie!"
I'm actually hoping they BOTH did it. A whole line of ladies, queued up and ready to go. All of them slapping Olivia and telling her to get back in that room ...

How fitting that today is Slap Your Irritating Co-Worker Day. I'll direct the ghosts of Norma and Irene to Broadwayboobs' thread:

(Perhaps Joan would like to do the honors?)
Wow, what a fascinating interview. I can see how Joan, her sister Olivia, and her mother was so much alike ... too much alike to really ever get along.
I would say "such a shame," but it's made them who they are.
Remarkable women.
Speaking of women, am I right that Joan Fontaine is the only surviving cast member from "The Women" in 1939?

I think you're right. Wow, even Little Mary is dead.
Now, get back in that room and congratulate Hattie!
