Posted: 1/4/06 at 11:44pmIt should be interesting. I always thought the most successful hosts were those that could really deliver the zingers without getting too nasty or political. Like Billy Crystal. You can't be too highbrow or PC for the Oscars or it won't be fun.

I don't get why it takes 6 months to prepare to be host of the Oscars. But, regardless, Jon should be ok since his job is making jokes about topical humor the day something happens. If his writers are Daily Show folk, it should be brilliant and take them say a week!

Posted: 1/5/06 at 12:33amI would have preferred Conan, but I can live with Stewart. He should be entertaining and funny without being buffoonish.

It's now official. As the end of the year films have been unveiled, and film festivals and critics have wet themselves all over what I have considered anemic attempts at best, I've felt that I am becoming completely disengaged from what is accepted as American film "art". This choice to present what it is that we offer to the realm of world cinema absolutely cements my feeling - I have no connection whatsoever to what it is that other people are experiencing in a movie theatre.
That's fine - I don't have a problem being the odd man out - I've been there before. But I really feel like we have crossed over a threshold concerning this medium.

The only highlight of the last year, in my opinion, was Mrs. Henderson Presents. But then again I'm an old prude of sorts. LoL
Stewart hosting... he is classy, witty and funny... I'll give it a watch for him... and Judi.

jon will do a fantastic job. There are so many that respect him as an entertainer.
I think elphaba3 and i are the only ones who don't 'get' conan.
I just don't think he's funny!

In part because of the heavy schedule of television events this winter, including the Olympics in February.
It was done to avoid conflicts.

Posted: 1/5/06 at 9:38amI think Jon is a great choice. Chris was good, but not great (like many of the previous hosts have been).

That is stunning. I think it was an excellent year in film.
So do I. Certainly better than last year. In 2005 we saw:
-- the return of politically-engaging films (SYRIANA, GOODNIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, CRASH, MUNICH);
-- intelligent and finely-crafted blockbusters (BATMAN BEGINS, KING KONG)
-- three-dimensional gay characters take centre-stage in mainstream cinema (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, CAPOTE)
-- daring new directions taken by established filmmakers (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, MATCH POINT)
-- an attempt at faithful adaptations of Broadway musicals, with much of their original cast (RENT, PRODUCERS)
-- the increasing popularity of documentaries (MARCH OF THE PENGUINS, MURDERBALL)

Posted: 1/5/06 at 1:32pmI assume Jon Stewart brings along his staff of writers from THE DAILY SHOW. It will be a nice change from the usual gang (Bruce Vilanch, Robert Wuhl, Alan Zwiebel, etc.) who always write for Whoopi and Billy.
