Judy Garland's Grandniece Audra Mae

She's an Alternative Rock/Blues singer based in Los Angeles, with a voice more like a cross between Janis Joplin and Patsy Cline than that of her Grand-Aunt Judy or her first-cousins-once removed Liza and Lorna.

She sings mostly her own material, but here she is, ripping the tinsel out of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas":

WOW!!!

She is SOMETHING... I personally don't like that song.. I always cringe a little inside when anyone (even Ms. Gumm) sings it.. but Audra Mae was workin' it.

Now I want to hear more!

Her mom was Judy's niece Judaline (sp?), who was the daughter of Virgina (Jimmy), the middle of the three Gumm girls.

What's with the snickering on 'gay', though?

Pretty amazing vocal resemblance.

Joey, I'd say her voice is remarkably similar to Judy and Lorna, but she uses it more like the others you mention.

And I think the laughing was at a comment that someone in the band makes. It's SOUNDS like after she sings "Make the yuletide gay" that someone says something to the effect of, "I do, every year"

She's still touring Europe with White Chistmas.

I guess what we're hearing is Jimmie, actually.

What's exciting to me is that, even though she's singing in a blues/jazz/rock idiom, she has that sense of dynamics and dramatic build that Judy had.

I'm glad she's not a Judy/Liza/Lorna wannabe and that she writes her own songs. Good for her!

She is incredible! Damn.

And I LOOOOOVE that you can totally hear that she's related to Judy Garland. There's something in her voice that beckons strongly to Garland while still being all her own.

I would like to her her under better circumstances. In that clip she seems tired, strained and had some real pitch problems. But I love the quality and the interpretation. Was this perhaps done at the end of a long set as an encore perhaps?

Click on the other links. She doesn't usually do standards or Judy songs at all. I think it was a unusual holiday encore.

She is so talented! Have seen her numerous times at cabarets here and I am definitely a fan. Check out her myspace music page!

She never mentions any of her famous relatives on her page execpt under Influences where she lists "my grandmother" and about halfway in, Judy Garland. Pretty cool.

I love her sound...

The video I'm linking you guys to isn't the best but the audio is decent. It's sums up her song-writing style nicely. I also like her song Fool's Gold a lot.
