That's an interesting reading, Bobby, and I can see where you're coming from.
Like I said, she deserves nods for both "Revolutionary Road" and "The Reader," so, who cares?
Ummm, Penelope Cruz who was favored to win for her SUPPORTING role in VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA, as well as Marisa Tomei who will most likely be left out from the category since Winslet's leading role is taking that spot. The Oscars need to do away with that stupid rule. Winslet got nods for both THE READER and REV ROAD in the lead category at the BAFTAS.
Do the 2 seperate studios argue over lead and supporting? Does Winslet, or any other actor in her situation, have a say in things?

Personally, I don't understand the hype surrounding Tomei's performance in "The Wreslter." I mean, she's not bad in the film, but, award worthy? I really don't think so. She was much better in "In the Bedroom."
And, yes, Cruz is a funny little spit-fire in "Vicky, Christina, Barcelona," but, come on. What Kate Winslet does in "The Reader" is heads and shoulders above what any other actor did this season, regardless of how large or small her role is.
I understand what you're saying, and I wish that she could just get two nominations in the Lead category; however, those are the Academy rules. Do they make sense? Not to me. However, she does deserve recognition for her two brilliant pieces of work.

I agree and that's why these awards really need to be taken with a grain of salt. I felt the same way about Viola Davis's Golden Globe nomination for Doubt. Yes she gave a good performance, but I didn't think it was worthy of a nomination.

I disagree. I felt it was one of the strongest supporting performances of the year. In an ideal world, Henson, Adams, Tomei, Davis, and Cruz would all get nominated for their supporting roles as they all were perfection in their respective films.

I agree, MissChung. I'd much rather see RoseMarie DeWitt get the nomination over Davis and Tomei.
A good bunch of nominees for the Oscar should be Adams, Cruz, DeWitt, Blanchett, and my winner, Winslet!
"Why is the Academy so reluctant to have actors nominated more than once in the same category. It's allowed in the non-acting categories."
They used to back in the day. For isntance, Norma Shearer was nominated for Best Actress for both THE DIVORCEE and THEIR OWN DESIRE (1930), winning for the former. I wonder why they changed it.
She was fabulous in The Reader (I have to wonder, though, why Rosemarie DeWitt has gotten jack **** for Rachel Getting Married), but I think her work in Revolutionary Road is the best of her career.

My son and I in our awful British accents randomly utter the phrase "gather" to mock Kate's annoying acceptance speech. (We do this partially to infuriate my wife.) I accept her as a great actress, but I found her speech to be ridiculous! "Gather" "Gather"

I'd much rather listen to "Gather, gather," then the ranting, raving, and screaming of Halle Barry's acceptance speech a few years back.
I hope she wins for "The Reader"...I'd like to see her keep Penelope Cruz from getting that award.

I can't believe she was robbed of two nominations. Her work this year is far better than any other actor nominated.
All so they could nominate an "actor," who sang the classic, "You Know It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp." What a disgrace...
So what if Taraji Henson sang that song? She was nominated for her performance in BENJAMIN BUTTON and that alone. Granted, I thought it was a rather nondescript part, but your logic is off.

My logic is simple; this woman is not an actor! She can't compare to Winslet, Adams, Davis, etc. It's a joke and makes the academy seem laughable...
Okay, I'll humor you.
Why isn't she an actor?

Okay, before we get into a long debate about something completely subjective where you're not right or wrong, and neither am I, I'll simply say that her style of acting, her performance, they do nothing for me. I don't think she has the chops as the rest of the ladies in her category.
I was really hoping Kate Winslet would pull out two nominations. That's all I'm saying. No reason to get nasty, personal, or insulting.

Who's being nasty? You're the one with the sour grapes in your mouth.
It's fine that you don't care for her acting and/or performance (I wasn't moved, either), but to call her nomination a disgrace and putting her down as an actor -- and all because Winslet didn't garner two nominations like you'd hoped -- is rather childish.
Furthermore, I said your logic was off because you don't think she should be nominated (along with the likes of Adams and Davis) just because she sang a now-forgotten Oscar-winning hip-hop song.
You can not like her performance or her acting in general.
But it is incorrect, and ignorant, to say she is not an actor.
She's been a steadily-working actress for over a decade now.
I knew something like this would happened...but it's not a tragedy...
So she will win LEADING ACTRESS for "The Reader" which is what everyone wanted in the first place...right?

Funny, I don't think my reaction to her nomination is "childish."
I just feel that an actor of Winslet's caliber should have gotten the recognition for two great performances over performances that are mediocre at best (in this case, that's my opinion of Henson).
Okay, there really was no connection or logic to my commenting on her "Hard Out There For a Pimp," performance, I was just rambling.
And, StickToPriest, I think it's great that you feel that just because people get work makes them an actor; I, personally, disagree.
For yeah:
I don't care who's wrong or right
I don't really wanna fight no more
(Too much talkin', babe)
Let's sleep on it tonight
I don't really wanna fight no more
This is time for letting go

I love that song! Angela Bassett should have won the Oscar for that performance...want to debate that?? hehe
Actually, I agree with you on that. She was my fave pick that year. She could've been the first African-American actress to win a Best Actress Oscar, and it would've been well-deserved. Instead, Halle gets that unmerited distinction. Blah!
If only "What's Love Got to Do with It" came out the following year...She had tough competition with the eventual winner Holly Hunter...
But Angela Bassett could have won over the 1994 competition of Susan Sarandon in "The Client", Miranda Richardson in something...was it called "Tom and Liv"(?) and winner Jessica Lange for "Blue Sky".
Too bad

StageManager, a tip of the hat to you on that one! Halle Barry doesn't deserve that honor! It should have been either Bassett for "What's Love Got to Do With It?" or Diana Ross for "Lady Sings the Blues."
