it was said a couple pages ago, i believe, that kong was a lock for the oscar nomination because EW gave it an A.
What I meant (and Popcultureboy correctly interpreted me) was that with the addition of the EW review to all the other major reviews already released, it is clear now that KONG has a Best Picture nomination locked. EW and Rolling Stone were the last of the major entertainment magazines to chime in, and the trade papers have already done so. What's left now are the dailies, and they don't hold as strong an influence.
For what it's worth: although I found the RENT film very flawed and, at best, mediocre, many friends whose opinion I respect quite enjoyed it, and even cried. I haven't written down my thoughts on the movie yet (not that my views are worth anything, with all the reviews already posted), but I'll probably write one in a self-indulgent thread next week.
Just a little bit of a bump as the UK reviews are starting to trickle in. The Sunday Times, who I would think would be hard to please and have no truck with blockbusters gave it a rave, 5 star review. It says that Jackson has "upgraded the whole shebang - characters, story, themes, action - into something richer and more riveting" and generally gushes about how incredibly wonderful the movie is, with only one minor quibble to do with Jamie Bell's character.
