Lance Bass: I'm Gay

Posted: 7/28/06 at 3:39pmwell, there used to be a code among journalists of not reporting matters of that nature. i just do not think it is fair to the person - no matter the situation.

So RobbO--are you saying that Andy Towle should NOT have written in his blog that he saw Reichen and Lance at the A House in Provincetown?
Once Lance decided to go out dancing--whether he threw a glass at Reichen or not--how did it become Andy's responsibility to NOT write about it?
And what about the posters on Andy's blog--are they somehow honorbound NOT to write about it either? How do you police such anti-gossip laws?
And do they hold true for heterosexual celebrities? Or must we keep quiet only about homosexual celebrities?
I know that the Internet makes for new rules, but what are those new rules: And who set them?
And how about spoken gossip at a cocktail party or on the phone between friends?

as long as it's not printed or broadcast in a medium in which someone's mother is going to see or hear, that seems fine.

Well, then should we NOT be allowed to speculate on the homosexuality of celebrities here on broadwayworld?
There's no real difference between broadwayworld and towleroad, is there?
and I have a problem with your equating being gay with something a mother shouldn't hear--but that's another issue

people on here speculating vs. a towleroad which is more "reporting" is one huge difference.
and a mother should never have to learn that her son is gay by any other medium that his own two lips.

Towleroad is actually less of a news organ than BroadwayWorld is. Andy is not a reporter, nor does he claim to be. He provides a mixture of gossip, news links, opinion and eye candy for his growing number of readers.
Once Lance shows up at the A House, Andy or any of us is perfectly within our rights to mention it.
But RobbO--I hope I don't catch you speculating about Anderson or Jake here on Broadway World--at least not until they say something to their mothers!

joey, i don't report news or have a "readership" that looks to me for news.
if i was a former editor of a major gay publication that had a blog with a huge following, i would not "report" on a persons sexuality.

Honey, what else is there for a former editor of a gay publication to DO?
(Genre, major?)

as much as it kill me and i'm sure this will come back and bite em right in the ass. but i do see where robbo is comming from. granted i had to stoop down to his hight to do so but.....
when i was i gainesville, and i had roomies, and i told them there responce was "but you dont act gay" and i laughed and asked well how should i act? responce "well like jack on will and grace or the queer eye guys" i shook my head and told them not gay guys act like that, and went into a long talk that lasted into the night.

My 2 cents: it's one thing to speculate among us lay people. BUT I have a hard time being accepting the fact that if a celebrity is at a gay bar or party, that it's free fodder for journalists to report on it. The same way it irritates me that they take all these pix of celebrities during their private vacations.
I don't know, maybe I'm old fashioned. But I feel that a gay bar and/or party should be, in a way, a safe haven for gay people. You can go there without fear of being recognized. The same way it sucks when a military dude gets outed and kicked out of the military by someone who saw him go into the the club.

"a gay bar is a safe haven for gay people. you can go there without fear of being recognized."
What am I? A Leper? What character or physical flaw do I have that I need to be "protected" from society?

Posted: 7/28/06 at 5:31pmYou and I are ok, chita. But it should be a place for many guys and gals that are closeted or in the process of coming out to feel safe. I do not believe that everyone is as comfortable as I am about being gay. And I remember when I was first coming out, the stress of going to a bar and someone recognizing me as I walked in.

You are more than Ok, DD. Sorry if it sounded like I was attacking you.
I think we are all a little racist, a little homophobic, and a little imperfect.

Not at all... healthy discussion.
We all are. We just have to learn to take it when called on it... and I get called on it often.

Excellent point PJ.
edit: and just because you are effeminate doesn't automatically mean you don't have a prejudice against effeminate men.

"Rath--you're probably right: I think he's clueless about a lot of stuff. Lance also said that he didn't want to be a spokesperson or riding on floats, as if that's a bad thing--despite the fact that his boyfriend, your rugged AND effeminate cousin, has been proudly (and handsomely) riding on floats ever since he and his ex-lover Chip first came out on network TV."
Reichen has had very different life experiences than Lance. He was never in a boy band with all that entails - the fanbase is mostly screaming females. Reichen had his own career issues - he left the Air Force, his dream career, because Don't Ask, Don't Tell became too oppressive. He had to hide everything about himself and he couldn't take it anymore.
He is fortunate to have an incredibly supportive mother - in fact, long before he realized he was gay (obviously he's quite a bit younger than I), she was the first family member to whom I myself came out - because I knew I would be accepted without question. That's the kind of person she is, and she raised him to know that being true to yourself is what matters most.

chita/joey - it's called ethics. something sorely missing in today's "journalism."

Why am I on this site when I should be at the beach! It's only six blocks away. I love Cape May.
Anywho, I do actually feel a resonsibility to not out people when I type on here. There are several Broadway/Hollywood folk I know who are adored by many here. I also know their sexual orientations. I just don't feel comfortable going into Such and Such's Appreciation thread to out them when they are not out publicly. I don't think it's my business to make that choice for them. Yes...even when they are at Splash for Musical Mondays. It's not MY choice to make.
However, I do consider Andersen Coopers' "We pay taxes, too" line to Pat Roberts and Raul Esparza's "You'll have to ask my wife...and my boyfriend!" line from Broadway.com to be more than enough admission. So...fire away!
