I really enjoyed this film. I saw it online (I'm bad, I know) about a month ago and really do recommend it.

I got to see an advance screening of this and it was easily my favorite film of the year so far. My favorite film by Von Trier who I'm not always a fan of. It manages to be completely devastating and uplifting at the same time. And Dunst gives a stellar performance. And that's something I never thought I would say.
If you get a chance see it in a theater with a big screen and good sound system. The ending almost rattled me out of my chair.
Go see it!

I loved it. It managed to have von Trier's trademarks but also doing something different without too many of his worst impulses.

Downloaded it recently from the cable provider. Not my cup of tea. It seemed to move at a snail's pace in parts. Alexander Skarsgard and Ms Dunst didn't seem to have any real chemistry to me. It was good to see his dad Stellan in the flick though who along with Charlotte Rambling at least kept it interesting. Not a bad movie at all, just not memorable to me.

With Antichrist, I officially gave up on Von Trier. I'm just not enough of a masochist to endure any more of his work.

What a disturbingly beautiful film!
The cinematography, the Wagner soundtrack, the performances, it all clicks. Dunst is outstanding, and I too thought I would never say that.

Paulyd, will there be commentary on the disc? I'd LOVE a track with Dunst!

I'm with Matt and Erik--after ANTICHRIST, no more Von Trier for me.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

AC...I said I felt that way BEFORE seeing Melancholia. This is by far his best film ever. And has probably made it to the list of one of my all time favorites.

I should have read your post more carefully. Is it really that good? i've seen all his films--loved BREAKING THE WAVES, liked MANDERLAY, and have disliked everything else with varying degrees of passion.

Yeah it really is that good. I have never loved everything Von Trier did either. I really liked Breaking the Waves, Manderlay, and Dancer in the Dark (mostly for Bjork). But thought the rest of his stuff has been hit or miss or just bad.
He gets everything right here. It's beautifully shot and beautifully acted. And I really can't say enough about Dunst. As far as I'm concerned she's the front runner for the Oscar at this point. I just hope Von Trier's outburst at Cannes doesn't hurt her chances.

Finally--FINALLY--saw it and liked it quite a bit, though not to the degree everyone else seems to. Dunst is wonderful, but I will always be hypnotized by Charlotte Gainbourg, every time.
The final scene is a balls-to-the-wall knockout. If you downloaded it or watched it on TV you just flat-out didn't experience the ending.

Agreed Borstal. The ending really needs to be seen in a theater with a big screen and a kick ass sound system.

The DVD and Blu-ray release will include four featurettes, and hour long documentary and hopefully the Lars Von Trier commentary which is present on the French release. For all those who hated Melancholia your probably going to hate his next film which is entitled 'Nymphomaniac'

I found this movie to be a pretentious piece of boring crap. Thank goodness I saw it at home and didn't waste my time or money.

I will say this.. even for a screener the sound was AMAZING. And as far as having to see it in a theater.. my tv and sound system are beyond brilliant and I prefer it to most theaters.. and I get to go to the best screening houses and theaters in LA. The movie is crap.

I had never seen a Von Trier movie before this one, and I was skeptical going in. I loved it. I found it engrossing, moving and profound. Made me feel and understand intense depression in ways I never had. I left the theatre deliriously high on life. I guess I can see why it wouldn't be some people's thing, but it easily became one of my all-time favorite films. And it was visually stunning with top-notch performances.
