Bills bestowing 'personhood' at the moment of conception are making their way through the state legislatures in Virginia and Oklahoma, and there are no roadblocks in their way. These bills will result in many forms of hormonal birth control becoming illegal, and will elevate abortion to a capital offense for both the doctor and patient.
Yay small government!

I am sick of mainly older men having the right to make up stupid laws about women's bodies. It would be like me puttng out a law that men over the age of 50 MUST get a vesectimony...ugh and that whole Required Vaginal Penetration why don't we just legalize rape while we are at it

Posted: 2/16/12 at 11:05amThere's some historic quote about a society getting the government it deserves. Many people vote 'D' or 'R' without giving any thought to the person they're voting for, or the implications of an election. In 2010 the GOP swept into power in state houses across the country, and this is the fallout. They ran on a platform of job creation, but if you did any research into their position on social issues, nothing here should be a surprise.

Posted: 2/16/12 at 11:34amIt's disgusting how regressive so many modern Republicans are. From Santorum being against women fighting on the front lines because it'll cause their male counterparts to want to protect them and thus distract, to their stance on any gay issue, to this. This way of thinking is ludicrous and should have dissipated decades ago.

Please educate yourself. The Obamacare health laws give a huge amount of power to the Dept of HHS which is run by Kathleen Sebelius. What you are seeing now is a dog and pony show to make Congress look like they have a stake in the game. In the end, anything they can't do through Congress will be taken care of by Sebelius.

"Last time I checked HHS didn't run state legislatures"
That's what the fight is about. The federal law in Obamacare is overriding state legislatures. That's why the Supreme Court is looking at it, because it's a huge power grab by the federal government.

The right is speaking intelligently on these issues. Where's the intelligence on the left?

Posted: 2/16/12 at 1:21pmThe Supreme Court has ruled quite definitively on abortion with Roe v. Wade. These gambits are to stir up the right wing base and drive more donations and will, of course, be struck down by the supreme court.

Loudly? Yes. Passionately? Yes. Intelligently? No. Or if they are, they are hiding it well.

Perhaps, but not unless good people become more active and informed at the polls. In the meantime, these legislatures are running rampant. In addition to moving to restrict women's access to healthcare, they've been busy making it more difficult for the young and the poor to vote, and stripping away union rights.

Funny you should mention Union rights....That sure hasn't turned out the way they said it would:
Wisconsin is the only state in the country to have lost jobs for the past six months
