I just watched the first episode, I enjoyed it. My memory isn't the best because I read the books forever ago but it really seemed to not change much from the books. This season is based on the first four books. I thought Patrick Warburton was great as the narrator Snicket and Harris seems like a good fit for Olaf. It already got renewed for a second season apparently.

I'm part way through episode 2 and really liking it so far aside for NPH.

I haven't made up my mind on whether or not I like it. I'm pretty back and forth on NPH who is sometimes funny and sometimes cringey (as usual). My biggest problem is how the director appears to have unapologetically ripped off Wes Anderson's style. Anyhow, I really enjoy Joan Cusack as Justice Strauss.

This only covers the first four books? In my head this was 13 episodes that covered each book. I'm slightly less interested now. I wonder if the full story will get told this time.

It's already been picked up for a second season, and knowing netflix a final third season is likely.

Watched the first episode yesterday. It reminded me why the original film combined 3 movies into one. The episode moved so slow, and I am honestly not sure if I will continue watching.

I don't really enjoy how the children look like their film counterparts. Even their costumes and hair styles are too similar.
I'm loving Patrick though, which I'm shocked to admit.

I guess this Violet sort of looks like Emily Browning, but I think the kids just look like the characters?
Loved the series, but it's a bummer that season 1 only goes one book further than that movie. In the show, those are the best two episodes.
NPH is all wrong for the part but I enjoyed his scenes in disguise much better.

Yeah, I wish they had gotten someone else for Olaf, but I pretty much love the series aside from the NPH casting. The next season is going to take us through book 9, which will be exciting to see all those books.

Having not read the books, it really was depressing not seeing that B plot come through fruition. I had SOO much hope. This really is a depressing story, I probably cried like 10 times or yelled at Mr. Poe like 50.
I can't wait to see more, though!

I loved the books as a kid and I'm enjoying the show. I agree it's slow though.

Book one was SO DAM SLOW, but after that I loved it. I agree NPH is not amazing but he's serviceable enough. I also enjoyed the last two episodes the most, and am exceedingly excited to see the rest put on screen!!
I was a major fan of the books and they seem to be doing it perfect justice. There are definitely a lot of added elements (of course I haven't read these books in probably a decade) but I don't mind any of them, I actually really loved them showing Will Arnett and Cobie Smulders' characters which ties the first four stories (which I recall didn't really have much contribution to the overall mysteries of the series) in with the other more mystery heavy books. I do wish they had gone through book 5 though as the ending of that book was a great cliffhanger and really would have made a nice season finale.
On a production design standpoint, I really thought they did a good job of differentiating from the film's aesthetics for the most part. Whereas the books and movie seemed to be set in an alternate reality 1930's I got a 1950's vibe from this one. I still think I prefer the film's production design overall but of course that was a major studio production and this was not.
Like I said though, I really liked it! Can't believe I have to wait a whole year for more episodes.

Wish Bill Hader was cast as Olaf. NPH seems fine at the disguises but does nothing for me as Olaf. I'm glad they are introducing the VFD/Secret society stuff early on. In the books it didn't really appear until the 5th or 6th book and it always felt like it came out of left field. It feels organically tied to the series now

Most of the books are way too short for that many episodes per book in my opinion. I remember as the series went on they started going over 300 pages but the first book is only 162 pages.

I believe you misunderstood TotallyEffed and they thought the show was going to cover all 13 books in one season, one episode per book..

well it did come to fruition in that it showed where those triplets came from and how they came to be at the same school as the Baudelaires. I thought the buildup was pretty clever.
