Ed Wood was great & really captured the guy & his stock gang of charactors
...and it's FAR from little-known.
A few favorites that I dont think could be considered well known:
Starstruck - Charming 1982 film from Australia with some great songs about a young woman coming of age and trying to become a star.
Liquid Sky - 1982 film about tiny aliens and heroin. Very trippy and VERY 1982.
Ciao Manhattan - 1972 Starring the amazing character of the 60s, Edie Sedgewick as a girl like herself. Lots of clips used from Warhol films she starred in. Watches like a documentary.
Although Ed Wood was critically acclaimed and won awards, it grossed only 5 million dollars in it's theaterical run and the wide majority of people today are not familiar with the film at all.
Ed Wood may have flopped at the box office, but it has shown up on TV quite a bit. It still turns up pretty regularly.
Once these "lesser known" theatrical release movies start running on TV a lot, they completely loose their "lesser known" status. Do you know how many people have seen Ed Wood on television? On home video? There is a very well-received special edition DVD of it available now your local video store right now.
I don't mean to single this one film out. So many others listed are in the same boat. They air on TV all the time. Some listed have had one, two, even THREE subsequent DVD releases... so they're aren't "lesser known" any more.

I 100% agree with best12bars. And I again want to encourage everyone to netflix Soldier Of Orange with Rutger Hauer. Yes, it's in Dutch with subtitles, but it kicks @$$. Really a fantastic film that more people should see. =)

(And no, I don't have stock in the film or anything... My uncle told me about this movie back in the 80's, when it was next-to-impossible to find... Anyway, I found it, I watched it, and I've loved it ever since.)
