Looking to relocate to the New York area. There are a few interesting job opportunities in Long Island (not the boroughs, but actual Long Island). I have a few questions before pursuing these opportunities...
Can you live in NYC and easily commute to Long Island?
If you live on Long Island, is it easy to go back and forth to the city on weekends etc?
Do you need a car to comfortably live in Long Island or to commute to Long Island?
Cost of living?
Any advice is appreciated...
Depends on where you live on the Island. You will need a car. Your commute by train (again depending on where you live) could be anywhere from 20 minutes to two and a half hours.
Cost of living tends to go down the longer the commute (That is until you get farther out i.e The Hamptons).

I live on Long Island.
There's a reason for its being named LONG Island. It is 150 miles long. Way out east, it's Montauk Point. Closer to the city it's Valley Stream. Once you pass out of the Queens border heading east, you'll notice the difference on either the Parkways or the Expressway. It's a slower pace of life and quite genial.
As was mentioned earlier, it depends on what part of Long Island you're considering. I live on Central Suffolk, down by the Bay. I have an easy ride into the city via the Long Island Rail Road. From Patchogue, it's an hour and a half. From Ronkonkoma, it's only 1 hr 15 mins. Certain trains (called "bullets") make the trip to Penn Station in a mere hour. I use the time to catch up on my reading.
Let me know what part of Long Island you're considering. I'll be able to provide more specific information for you. You can PM me.
I work in the city and live out on Long Island right by the Ronkonkoma train station. It's not exactly an easy commute, but I've been doing it for a while now. Having a car is pretty much a necessity. The public bus system is not exactly the most extensive or timely. The cost of living in terms of housing is probably a bit cheaper (but that really depends on the area you're looking at). Food costs are generally about the same. Like Dollypop said you can PM also if you'd like.
Most of my family is from Long Island, and I'm quite familar with the North Shore. When I used to live in Greenvale, the commute from the Hicksville station to NYC was about half an hour. From Lindenhurst I think it's 45 minutes to an hour. I can't be of help as far as cost of living is concerned, but anything else related to Long Island I'll be happy to help with. (:

Thanks for the information everyone! Dolly, it says you don't accept PMs
, but I'd love to ask you a few more questions if possible. Frog fans and Perfectly, I'm going to send you a pm.

I'm at school on Long Island--about 40 minutes by train to the city. I have my car at school (yes, I drove it all the way from Texas) and it's definitely a necessity to have your car!
