Saw Sylvia on Sunday; surprisingly good. I normally am not a huge Gwyneth Paltrow fan, but she was excellent as Sylvia Plath.

*** SPOILER ***

the more i think about it, the more i like the way they ended laura linney's character's story. things like that do happen in "love" and many times relationships are left openended or incomplete. it was sad, sure, but very truthful.

even more affecting was emma thompson's performance. i think she deserves a best supporting actress nomination for her portrayal. it really made me think of people in my own life and what they must go thru on a daily basis.

I agree with Robb. Emma's work was exquisite.

But I think the movie being perceived as a lightweight entry may preclude an Oscar nom. It's up there with many classic movie-stealing turns, like Maggie Smith's in CALIFORNIA SUITE.

Yes, sadly, it is not likely she will get nominated--too much competition in that category, and she is not at the top of that buzz. Bill Nighy has the best chance--and at the moment, he is not at the top of that category's buzz either.

(In case you never knew--I'm an Oscar freak. =D) lol

I definitely agree she should get a nominaion- her work is wonderful in this film, and even in her few scenes she makes you relate to what she is going through and be touched by it.
And you should also remember the Academy loves her... they LOVE to nominate people who've been nominated/won before. So maybe she has a chance!

Off Topic- I sooooooooooooo hope Charlotte Rampling gets a nomination for "Swimming Pool", even though she is such a dark horse... She should have been nominated for "Under The Sand" three years ago and WON.

""I love the fact that they showed all aspects of love..."

Wrong. There wasn't a single gay relationship."

A little late in the game, granted, but I picked up this DVD the other night. On the extra features/deleted scenes, you get to see another story arc featuring the headmistress of the school Emma Thompson's kids go to and her lover, which is a beautifully acted scene on both ladies' parts. It (along with a good hour and a half of footage) unfortunately wound up on the cutting room floor.

And, proving that I once again spend way too much time on the Internet, I remembered your comment, LcZ, so I thought I'd just toss that out.

And there's nothing like Colin Firth jumping into a lake. Yummy yum yum.

I'm with DG. I watch it when I need a good cry, and then go away feeling renewed. Such a great movie.

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true...
All I want for Christmas
Is you...

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you...
You baby

I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeer click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
You...

All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one I really need -
won't you please bring my baby to me...

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want him for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas is
You...

I am probably the only person on BWW who has yet to see RENT.

Will my OT card be revoked?

But, back to Love Actually... I may have to pop in the DVD this afternoon.
Popcorn will be served for those who would like to join...

This movie has become a staple of my family's holiday season, in addition to It's a Wonderful Life and A Miracle on 34th Street. It's cliched and sappy, but it's also fun and extremely enjoyable.
