Finally saw it tonight and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't anything at all like the terrible trailer suggested. It wasn't a comedy at all but a borderline-horror movie that actually sort of reminded me of Bergman in some moments. And I must say that Jack Black gave a decent dramatic performance.
Anyone else see it? It kicks THE DARJEELING LIMITED out the window.
I miss Margo and the I Miss the I Miss Margot thread(s).
Loved Squid and the Whale, but didn't care for this one. Honestly told, but almost relentlessly miserable and downbeat.
The acting was, mostly, terrific. I thought Jennifer Jason Leigh and Zane Pais were fantastic. Black can be dynamite when cast properly, but he's only decent in this, and unbelievably bad when called upon to cry. Kidman, however, does some of her best work here. Incisive, brave, and wholly unsympathetic. She makes my top 5 for Best Actress of '07.

I actually enjoyed Black's crying. I thought he was perfectly cast.
I really enjoyed this movie...not as much as SQUID but it was almost as good.
I thought it was very underrated...simple, touching, surprisingly funny, smart, and always real, the best part of the film were the performances, mostly all of which are stunning. Kidman and Leigh deserved Oscar nods.
I recetally saw it was well, and thought it was very well done. Kidman is a great actress period.

I'll wait for DVD. I absolutely hated Squid and the Whale.
Matt - you can stop waiting its been out on Dvd for months now
Really? HA! I guess I can wait longer, then. Is it comparable to any other films? The mere mention of Squid and the Whale keeps me from getting anywhere near this film.
The Squid and the Whale creeped me out. Anna Paquin and Jeff Daniels making out after they'd played father and daughter... eeeeesh.
MATW was just okay for me. I generally don't like Nicole Kidman but in this and in Dogville I really enjoyed her.
Oh God...Dogville...that's not helping.
No, really- saw this last night and Kidman is hilarious in it. Think of the worst Virgo women you can imagine and you have the character in one. she and Leigh are fantastic together.
I thought Margot at the Wedding was one of the best movies of the year.
Me too- I seem to hate everything lately-but I loved this.
