Matt said that Madonna didn't have much of a lasting cultural impact and that Gaga had already surpassed her.

Wait...what? That's not what I said! I said Madonna's iconic period was 1983-1992, but that period certainly had a lasting cultural impact. That's why it was iconic. And I never said Gaga has surpassed Madonna. It's WAY too soon to see if Gaga will even have such an effect. I'm just saying Gaga has already permeated pop culture. She branded herself very well.

Madonna had already made it big on her own ORIGINAL look by the time she got into that mood in the photos.

This whole Madonna/gaga debate is silly in my opinion, because history is written. It's in the books,

If you think lady gaga compares or even surpasses Madonna in any way, why that's your opinion and you're entitled to it.

I remember it the other way around. Madonna was inspired by the gays who were already sporting the look. Much like she was inspired for Vogue.

So...was Cyndi Lauper ripping off Madonna's look in the 80s?

The plaid shirt look was from the gay community in the 70s. That was basically the "Castro clone" look.
