"Does it have 'nilla wafers in it?"
No, they go to the playground across the street and dip up the sand to mix in.

Yes, it's true!! I'll find it and post it.
Ms. Reece, an owner of Billy’s Bakery, a 1950’s-style Chelsea institution, had also been on “Queer Eye,” not as a contestant, but as a dessert maven. At the time, she was Billy Reece and had not yet begun the transition from man to woman.
For Mr. Berman, a young lawyer who had met Ms. Reece — then Billy — at a bar in Chelsea two years before, moving in with a transsexual required a leap of faith.....

Dottie I was about to say that Buttercup is owned by one of the former co-owners of Magnolia, but I thought it was really funny that people were saying how much better Buttercup was, so I decided to hold my tongue. I thought it was either Alyssa or Jennifer that owns Buttercup though, I remember reading it on the back of one of their stupid cookbooks once.
Anyway, I think at first the idea of Magnolia was really interesting... I mean with all the haute bakeries and patisseries every which way in New York, it was probaby really refreshing and nostalgic to be able to go to a place that had frilly curtains and sold misshapen red velvet, carrot, and devils food cake that looked like they were made by your 98 year old grandma, and pink cupcakes with yellow sprinkles are cute and all that...but 10 years or however long it's been later, I think they've outgrown the novelty and the cutesiness. When I see tourists lined up around the sidewalk and then they come out holding boxes upon boxes of cupcakes it makes me upset, I'm like, 'gosh, you're going to be soooo dissappointed when you actually taste those!'. And yeah, the chicks that work there are soooo mean. You would think that the shame of ringing up a customer's $40 order of cupcakes every 20 seconds would make them a little more sympathetic and friendly, but no, they're all bitches.
On another note, I do LOVE Rice to Riches downtown. That is it's name, right? Such a cheezy name, but damn, their rice puddings are really good and they have the most interesting toppings like candied pecans and blueberry pancake croutons...

Well, right. I'm sure there are people out there who enjoy the food, yes. I suppose what I was trying to ask is if the amount of New Yorkers who actually eat Magnolia Bakery's food on a regular basis is even somewhat in line with the amount of hype they receive. I was under the impression that a considerable amount of their business comes from tourists and most locals aren't really fans.
On another note, I've tried Crumbs, which I found a complete disappointment on all three times I gave it a try. The cupcakes tasted bland and dry. Dean and Deluca makes decent chocolate cupcakes.

Siamese-well, it's hard to say if native NYers are also on that line, I guess it's like shows-if you appeal to tourists, you've got it made!
I'll still go there for the cupcakes and banana pudding.

RockabyeHamlet, it's from an episode of the Golden Girls. Rose was using "cupcakes" as a metaphor (for kisses, I think) to Dorothy.
