Its January people. New Year's Resolution time. The gym is always packed with people joining gyms as their resolution. There are obese people, moderately overweight people, just out of shape people crowding the gym. Most will be gone by the end of February.
If someone sticks with it,great. I wouldn't mock anyone trying.
I was in the moderately overweight category when i first joined a gym ages ago. I stuck with it. The best compliment I received was from the guy who signed me up when I went to renew. "I thought you'd one those people who are gone in six weeks."

It sucks getting lumped in with that "new year's resolution" crowd when that isn't the case for you. I joined a gym at the beginning of the month, but it's because I moved at the end of December after having lost 50 pounds going to the gym at school. It'll be fun to prove people wrong by sticking around.
Also, I have to side with PJ and Jane here. I have a hard time believing that people would be that awful (or, at least, conspicuous in their utter rudeness).

Posted: 1/27/08 at 11:30pmPersonally, I think it's funny when a skinny person comes into a gym and can't keep up with the more full-figured person.

I've actually witnessed it.
Of course, that doesn't mean that Cruel did.
But it does happen.

I've never seen this happen at my gym either.
Cruel probably saw this in a movie and he decided to make it real so he could start another thread.

Same here--I used to WORK in one and I never saw or heard anything like that--even in college.
And by the way folks, if it's not okay to call the fat folks names, the same goes for the skinny ones--like skinny b!tch, skinny punk, etc--that's a two-way street.

The thing about obese people (and god knows I'm one) is that their burden in life shows on the outside. Everyone else carries their burdens inside and has the great good fortune of being able to keep their problems to themselves. Once they open their mouths to make fun, then their issues show.
Well put tourist!
Granted I go to a college gym, but half the time it seems like a place to be seen rather than workout. That said, it isn't un-common for someone of ample size to be thrown a "what are you doing here?" look. As rude as these looks can be, I've never encounterd something this offensive.

Eh, I don't think that obese people carry their burdens ONLY on the outside. My father is one, and that's not the whole truth at all.
And the intimidation I think many feel at the gym is felt by the scrawny among us as well.
This is a competitive country, ya'll, and the gym is even more so--especially here in New York. There's always a jerk.

Well I certainly haven't been going to the gym as long as Pal Joey...cause, well I'm younger. Much, much younger. But I haven't seen anything of the kind, either.
I see people who are obese at the gym and think, 'Good for you! And good for me!'
Oh...and there's this one guy at my gym...chunky...no doubt about it. And the face of Dan Futterman. I'd do him in a HEARTBEAT!

Perhaps I only go to best gyms, but in my experience, the people at the gym seem only interested in their own workouts. Not only do I never see anyone caring if an obese person is working out, I also never see anyone making a fuss over someone who is in perfect shape either.
As I said, the folks at my gyms mind their own business!

See, Cruel? That proves no one ever makes fun of obese people at the gym.

one of the most popular guys at my y is an overweight guy named vinny who works in the waste management industry. he's rounder than he is tall, but he's there at least three mornings a week puffing along on the treadmill or the long-strider or the elliptical and sweating in the sauna. he knows everybody's name and always has a kind word for you. i'd say in my gym those of us who are belly-ous outnumber those in shape almost 2-1. maybe in the afternoons it's different, but in the mornings everyone kinda gets along and is supportive of each other no matter what they look like.
i don't use the word obese much because i don't see the point. it has its purpose in a clinical dialogue, sure, but i just am not a fan of it in a day-to-day setting. overweight is overweight.

LOL, nope, not even the women's!

Obese is a quasi-nice way to say fat, but it still packs something of a punch. The insinuation is that you aren't just FAT, but disgusting. So, wow, I guess I'm kinda with you on this one, papa. I only say obese when I'm being less than ladylike.
I like a guy with a lil extra, as we've talked about on other threads before, so I don't think being overweight is such a turn-off. Seth Rogen anyone?

There is no such thing as a true synonym.
Obese is a quantifiable term. Fat is an opinion.
And no, I've never seen that happen at any gym of which I've been a member, and that covers four states and six cities. Maybe high school gym. But of course, my gym here promises "no judgments." (a slogan that, of course, excludes the trainers who love to offer unsolicited advice in hopes that you will be snookered into signing up for several hundreds of dollars worth of sessions)

*sigh* I'm still waiting on the cute boxing trainer to give me THAT advice.
But that might require me to take a boxing class. And I don't like hard objects flying at my f..........ahhhh, never mind.

Posted: 1/28/08 at 5:21pmI wouldn't dream of joining a gym that allowed fat people, let alone obese ones!
