My soul shrieks in anger
beat me with a wire hanger.
When it comes to seeing Mamma Mia
I'd rather drive off a bridge in my Kia.

What would you think about having a prologue set in New York at New Years eve where a lonely Sophie is at a club near Times square? When the party dies down she starts to sing ABBA:s Happy New Year with slightly altered lyrics displaying more sadness. It should be noted that the song is not all-out happy as it is but rather melancholic. After the song Hollywood magic works and she happens to stumble into the guy that she then falls in love with and plans to marry. Alternatively she could sing the song when she comes back at her apartment or when she wakes up the day after.
This would have some advantages:
The greek island would seem even more sunny due to the contrast with the wintry New York (which is lovely - but you get my point).
The addition of one of ABBAs best songs.
The movie would become more gripping in a lighthearted way.
The movie would become more exciting for people who have seen the musical.
A possible disadvantage is that the identity of the musical could be damaged. People visiting the musical could also become dissapointed when they don't get to see the New York scene.
Another addition to the movie would be an old greek (or scottish or american) fisherman living on the island (think of a cross between Hemingway and Santiago in the Old man and the sea). He would be a sort of distant grandfather figure for Sophie. When the movie ends he would be preparing his boat (Waterloo) for taking it out on a fishing trip while Sophie sings I have a dream. It would then be insinuated to the audience but not to Sophie that he is her father. The clue could be a token he owns, a tatoo or some memory flashback. The old man could with advantage be played by Sean Connery.

Why not?
YAY! I've seen the show three times and always had fun, as did the majority of the audience, judging from their reaction.
"Why?"
Simple...HUGE moneymaking international hit using songs that have had a following for 30 years. Throw in some pretty people and gorgeous location scenery with contemporary cinematography and you could have a runaway hit movie. It's fluffy fun that never pretends to be anything else. And that is a major factor in its success. People go in knowing exactly what to expect.
I never did know why people are so violently opposed to a show designed to entertain. That was actually the original intent of Broadway.

I thought they already filmed this...twice.
First it was called "Muriel's Wedding" and then the all boy version "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"

Uh, no doodle...
Neither of those used "Name of the Game" or "Under Attack".
DUH!

Forgot.
