As we sit here comfortably behind our computer monitors judging this person let's take into account that we didn't know him, let alone know the reasons why he chose to do what he did. I'm not saying it was right nor am I saying it was wrong....I am no one to judge. It was done. It saddens me that this person was going through so much to choose this route to begin with.

May he rest in peace. May his love ones find understanding and make peace and find the strength to carry on in the wake of it all.

Actually Angel - If you read the thread - we have been judging each other rather than the man who died this afternoon.

I did read the thread and some on this thread were sitting in judgement of the victim.

Ah - okay, and on THAT note, I am getting out from behind the computer and going to participate in life. Have a great weekend everyone! (especially you Elphaba! re: Man Jumps From Empire State Building)

Angel, it had turned into more a general discussion on suicide.

"it is selfish period, as it shows no respect for those left behind who will deal with this all of their lives"

So are you saying that a completely depressed and devastated person who wants nothing but to die, should go on living a miserable life so that no one else has to deal with the suicide?

no, I am saying that rather than take the easy way out, and just give up, get help....call a friend, call a hotline, go see your priest, minister, etc.

i can't believe that people still think that suicide is "selfish" or "a cowards way out"

although i must say i envy people who think that beacuse they have obviously never been in that possition themselves and can't understand how when you're at that point, you are not cabable of thinking of the poeple you're leaving behind.

beacuse of close minded people who think of suicide as something so selfish, very often, people dont seek help when they reach that point, or if they do seek help, are turned away.
i know from experience that the only way to get help right away is to go to an emergency room and be treated like a criminal. and you're not always thinking clear enough to do that.

i'm not pretending to know what was going through this man's head when he jumped beacuse no one truely will ever know exactly what he was thinking or what drove him to do that, but i do know that if he was at the point where suicide became his only option that it's almost impossible to think what others will feel after you're gone.
to me, it's kind of selfish to only think about the people he left behind and compleatly ignore the fact that he was obviously suffering.

I'm really surprised at the people on this thread who are so quick to judge. If you've ever felt so down and depressed that all you can see is black, that there is no hope, that the only solution is suicide - you don't believe other people will be worse off without you, but better off.

It's not a selfish act. It's the most hopeless one. I hope none of you ever feel that way.

Elphaba, I hope you realize what a complete and utter narrow-minded idiot you come across as in this thread.

Easy way out???? Could you kill yourself?

Oh, if it were so simple as going to a friend or priest. I know too much about this subject, so I"d better not argue it any further for fear of getting too aggravated.

I think we're all missing the material point, here: why does the Empire State Building have office windows that open that are large enough for a person to fit through? I know it's an old building, but renovate and lock those suckers!

Abba, you're not treated like a criminal when you seek help until you're on the verge of a criminal act- like suicide.

Adult suicide is one thing, especially the elderly and infirm. But I don't believe a spoiled upper middle class teenager can claim to have "nothing to live for" without sounding incredibly selfish.

And please, spare me the lecture on how closed-minded I am for not respecting the right of a 16 year old girl to slit her wrists and force her mother to have to clean up the mess in the bathroom, only to discover a suicide note blaming the rest of the world for her ridiculously petty problems when the only real problem in her life was depression (for which she'd been flushing the medication down the toilet for weeks).

To claim that anyone worth living for should have stopped them is a slap in the face to everyone who has known someone to attempt suicide. 9 times out of 10, the first sign is the attempt.

that spoiled uppper middle class teenager could have serious problems. mental illness does not only effect adults and poor people. my aunt works at a mental hospital that has a unit for elementary school age children. i'm sure they're just so selfish for having things like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder at such a young age. those selfish selfish brats.

Oh pulease.

skittles, there is no way that you can say a 16 year old committing suicide is a selfish act.
If only you were in that situation.

There is nothing more to say besides your comment being absolutely ridiculous.

This actually devolved into a judgement over those who attempt suicide?

Come talk to me when you're one of them.
