04-13) 14:08 PDT New York (AP) --

A man jumped to his death Friday out the window of a 69th-floor law office in the Empire State Building.

Police responded to the New York City landmark shortly before 3 p.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing a severed leg — covered in a gray sock — on the street below. The rest of the body was recovered from a setback on the 30th floor.

The tragedy in the 102-story building closed portions of the busy Midtown Manhattan street while the investigation continued.

The name of victim, a lawyer in his 30s, was not immediately released.

More than 30 people have committed suicide at the Empire State Building since it opened in 1931, including a 21-year-old man in February 2006. The skyscraper reaches 1,454 feet to the top of its lightning rod.

Wow. At first I thought, "Oh, how sad." and then I read, "a 911 caller reported seeing a severed leg — covered in a gray sock — on the street below. The rest of the body was recovered from a setback on the 30th floor." Um...eww.

I always feel so bad for people who feel that their life is that bad.
A lot folks view suicide as a selfish act, and it is to some extent, but I always feel like nothing is so bad you have to end it.
Sad.

What happened that caused the bulk of his body hit and stay on the 30th floor while only the leg hit the ground?

That is what happened to the young man last February too. People reported seeing him jump - but there was no body found on the street so everyone thought it was a hoax. Then, someone on one of the upper floors saw the body on the overhang above the street from their window.

See, in the case of people jumping off buildings in populated areas I'd say it's selfish, because what if they hit someone and seriously injure or kill them? Why end someone else's life as well? In other cases I think suicide is a horribly sad thing.

Not having come even close to being there, I can't imagine "others" are going through their mind when they jump.

People here (Seattle) jump off the Aurora Bridge. It used to be over an industrial area, but in recent years the area has become one of the hip places to live. Last year a couple was taking a stroll in the summer, when this girl landed just behind them. It was very sad for all involved... the lady was completely traumatized.

Exactly. I heard that happened with the NYU suicides in the library awhile back, as well. After the first one, I heard about a student who was so traumatized by it that he or she didn't go back in the building for weeks. When he/she finally ventured in again, another suicide jumper either just missed or brushed the student right before hitting the floor. It's scary.

They have this tiling in the NYU library that looks like spikes from high up to discourage jumpers. I remember being told that in my orientation and thinking "it looks like Q-bert, the video game".
Anyway, no one ever jumped when I was there.

The problem was that one of the jumpers was apparently on shrooms. He was a diver and hallucinated that he was diving into a big pool, according to the friends who were with him when he jumped.

it is selfish period, as it shows no respect for those left behind who will deal with this all of their lives. It is a cowards way out. Just my 2 cents worth.

then why didn't they stop him from jumping? or why didn't they try to get help?

still, that is very sad.

Well, if you are in the state of mind to actually kill yourself, you don't take into account who you leave behind or how bad it will hurt them. All you care about is ending the pain or depression. My grandfather shot himself because he was suffering from SEVERE pain and the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him, so they just kept giving him more and more pain killers. Eventually, the pain killers started not to work too well and he was again back in severe pain. After a few months of this, he decided to finally end the pain once and for all. I doubt he was thinking whether or not he was going to hurt my family by it . . . he just wanted to have the pain go away.

Elphaba, for many people it is the only way out. Life is a choice, just the way abortion is a choice.

Elphaba, a very close minded opinion.

No Tag - not closed minded at all, but experienced opinion I think. As a gay man in his forties, I can't tell you how many loved ones I have lost just to (but not just from) the AIDS crisis. There is a process that everyone goes through - and when someone takes their own life it deprives those left behind of the grieving and closure process.

While I understand the pain people may go through that drives them to choose suicide, I sometimes don't understand the lack of thinking of the ones left behind in such cases, even though one of the things that leads to suicide is a feeling of lonliness and being alone.

I have also witnessed (thankfully not experienced) the huge burden that those left behind must face in the aftermath of a loved ones suicide. It is a horrible thing to go through - and pretty much destroys you in the long run.

The loss of someone close to you is bad enough without the added thought of them taking their life - especially when you are someone who would have reached out to them and offered support, love and freindship when they needed it most and realized the victim just could not reach out and ask for the help.

There are many sides to it, and the answers are just not that easy.

Exactly. If the people who are going to be so selfishly devastated when they're "left behind" care so much, maybe they should have taken the time to use that emotion for the person when they were feeling so lonely and not after the fact.

No one should live for anyone but themself. Going on living for the sake of someone who is not you is the most absurd thing in the world. Your life belongs to you and only you.

That's all very good - but what is the FIRST thing any family member ever utters after finding out a loved one has taken their own life? "They did not seem depressed - I had no idea!". You can't reach out if you have no idea someone is in pain. It's not like you wake up one morning with it flashing on your forhead. Very common Foster - that is another reason that parents need to get the kids off the computers, away from the TV set and interact with them more.

True - this guy was in his 30's, but the average age of suicide victims is very young. Very sad - and I believe very preventable.

There are other reasons for suicide. Some do it to punish other people in their life, for example. And other factors. If it was just depression and loneliness, there'd be a lot less of us in the world.
