I can't even imagine what brought him to that point.....and over a girl.
You are a walking contradiction, Elphaba.
You "cannot even imagine what brought him to that point", yet you can toss it off by saying, "and over a girl" like you do in fact have it figured out - simple as that - exactly what was going through his head and why he killed himself.

"All because she willfully didn't take the medication for her (minor) mental illness and caused it to spin out of control."
if her illness spun out of control to the point where she commited suicide, how do you figure it was "minor"?
you and everyone else could have thought she had something minor, but becuase you were not in her head, you dont know if it went further than depression (which, by the way, is hardly a "minor illness")

Elphaba, you are a joke.
You can insult my age all you want, and you can run around claiming that I'm incapable of having an intelligent conversation, but I guarantee you that my history on this board has provided evidence that, clearly, would disprove that theory of yours.
I wasn't trying to insult you. What you don't seem to realize is that you are one of the largest hypocrite's around. From something as minor to the no whining avatar to now telling me that I only see in black and white (right before you view this ENTIRE issue as just that.)
Now, I could pull the age thing here and say that for someone of your age, you should know better - but I'm not really ready nor it is relevant to go down that path.
Just because I stated that I had suffered from depression and that I knew people that ended their lives doesn't mean that you have to come back and say soemthing like "Oh, BOY do I know depression," or talk about how many people you know have killed themselves. It's not a competitions. I know you're always completely hungry for attention, but there's no reason to strike at me regarding just HOW depressed I was (compared to you) or how MANY people I knew (compared to you.)
You are obviously entitled to your opinion, but, is it MY opinion that YOUR opinion is no better than the redneck republicans that say "being gay is a sin" or "you're not born gay - it's a choice."
So really, as I said, someone of your age shouldn't be parading around behaving as you are. Though I can say, with a bit of assurance, that if you had seriously suffered from depression (which, as Jane said - is a DISEASE), then you would realize that your comments, thoughts, and horrendous "opinions" are so off base that it's almost frightening.

Ok, everyone . . . look at the puppies and take a deep breath!

Cute dogs, but some of us are discussing something that is very important to us, and that we are passionate about. It's an important issue and healthy discussion (even if forms of arument) is a good thing.
So while the dogs are cute, I really hope that it doesn't act as a book end to this conversation. Ugh...

Posted: 4/14/07 at 12:46pmNo, everyone can continue discussing this (like you need my permission, anyway) . . . I just wanted people to sit back and breath for a minute. This is a very touchy subject and, like politics and religion, can get REALLY heated, and I just want to make sure that things aren't said that people will regret later. But, please do continue . . .

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply that you were suggesting this end, I really just meant that someones threads have died like this.
It's like when you're having sex and glance over to your dresser and see a picture of your mom or something.

Okay . . . *VERY* bad image there, Munk.
Oh, I know you didn't mean to imply anything. I just wanted to state why I did it. But, I agree that discussing things like this is a good thing . . . just sometimes it gets out of hand. But, like I said, I hope it doesn't die right now either because people have strong opinions about this.

"Jane, we are fine. I respect your opinion."
Thanks Elphaba.
I just want to say that some of you sound like you don't realize that mentally ill people don't have the clarity you have, and don't think and rationalize the way you do. I know it's hard, but try to imagine every minute of every day being filled with pain, sadness, loneliness, fright, panic, etc. It's probably not possible to imagine, that's how bad it is. When you're feeling like that, you want it to stop. It's just as painful, if not more, than physical pain, which also drives people to suicide. Are they also selfish?
Instead of sitting here calling sick people selfish for wanting their pain to stop, try and be thankful you don't have that disease and stop being selfish yourselves.

He apparently was talking to a client, calmly got up & walked to another room & jumped.
It is hard to see how anyone could have stopped him if it indeed happened this way

On this subject, Sweet Q knows what she's talking about. From what you and others have posted on here, it's clear there is a complete lack of knowledge on the topic.
Between my degree in psychology and my first-hand experience of both a suicide and many forms of mental illness, I'd have to disagree about my "lack of knowledge". But, if someone doesn't like my opinion, by all means, stick your head in the sand like SweetQ and pretend no one could possibly be as right as you if it makes you feel better.
Abba, she had been happy and functioning for 5 years on medication for depression. She stops taking her medication because she thought she was "cured" (against doctor's orders) and commits suicide within 6 weeks. There is documented correlation between the unmonitored termination of psychopharmacology medications and suicide. And I've spent 4 years studying this; I know the difference between *minor* depression that is easily and successfully treated with medication and the whole rest of the spectrum of depression and mental illness.

i'm curious, do you have mind-reading powers? did you invest in a crystle ball that allows you to see what others lives are like at all times?
it stikes me as odd that you can say someone is "happy" when you dont actually know what they're thinking.
you should know as an "expert" that medication for depression can cover up symptoms of other mental illnesses that can start to effect you after you stop taking them. in fact, non-complience with medication is a symptom on its own. but you must know that already.
just because you resent your friend for doing the "selfish" act of commiting suicide does not mean that "spoiled upper class teenagers" do not have problems. but that's something you obviously need to work out on your own. maybe a few more years of those studies would be helpful.

"Between my degree in psychology and my first-hand experience of both a suicide and many forms of mental illness"
If that is true, then why don't you know anything about this topic?
"But, if someone doesn't like my opinion, by all means, stick your head in the sand like SweetQ and pretend no one could possibly be as right as you if it makes you feel better."
No, nothing about this topic makes me feel good.
It's strange you mention that I'm pretending no one could possibly be as right as I am. Most of your posts are exactly like that. I'm sure you know from your studies that what bothers us about other people is usually what we don't like about ourselves.

skittles: Between my degree in psychology and my first-hand experience of both a suicide and many forms of mental illness, I'd have to disagree about my "lack of knowledge".
Wow! If that wasn't something to laugh at, I don't know what was. Look who's on her high horse now- Ms. know-it-all. I didn't realize you had your doctorate...or something you believe to be.

Very well put abba.

Your the one who is close-minded and has your head in the sand.
Your opinion doesn't mean that we are pretending that nobody could be as right as we are. You're the one who is stuck in your view and can't see others.

I have run into more assholes with PhDs than competent professionals with PhDs.
But something tells me that skittles has her B.A. in Psychology, which is something that the check out girl at the A&P can say as well.

I took a brief job in the Empire State Building a year ago last fall and worked on the 63rd floor. What always amazed me was how far the windows actually opened with no screeens or other protection. The windows open about halfway, more than enough space to push your body through.
Sad, sad story. And the guy totally shouldn't have been at work on a Saturday.

yeah i figured it wasn't a phd since it was only 4 years but i'm just saying, a degree doesn't mean you know everything.
