Did Michael Crawford audition and how much better or worse would that movie be if he played Bert. Opinions, facts?
Why would a 21-22 year old pre-stardom Michael Crawford have auditioned for that role?
But when was Forum? At least it would have been an Englishman and not the performance of DVD.
Forum was two years after Mary Poppins.
It's been bugging me for today about this acting choice, but I imagine Hero being Bert and doing it so much better.
Sure, Dick Van Dyke's accent is hilariously atrocious, but his performance is so energetic and lovable that the flaws just slide off my brain. Also Mary Poppins is still a great timeless film that I think it should have won Best Picture over My Fair Lady.
The accent may be horrible, but Mr. Van Dyke gives a wonderful performance.
I can't even imagine how horrific Michael Crawford would be. He would give the same hammy, screeching performance he gives in "Forum" and "Dolly". He makes the two movies unwatchable for me.
