Gorlois, the artwork is a variation of some that was used during the film's initial release in 1964, although there were several other logo/title designs used at that time as well. I always assumed it was supposed to represent theater lights or marquee lights. It was the cover art on the first release of the soundtrack, which was a vinyl LP record.
ETA I realize now that you are asking about the multi-colored dots surrounding the Poppins figure, not the marquee lights behind her. Duh. Just decoration?

The design being questioned from the blu-ray cover are multi-colored flowers.
I really do wish they would have gone all the way and incorporated the whole design from the film's original release, the Julie/Dick faces and the dancing Mary/Bert, et al.
But movie studios rarely use original poster artwork for home releases anymore with the exception of the MOD titles released by Sony, Warner Instant and MGM
I'm usually a fan of the vintage artwork, and I remember the big stars' heads on the soundtrack as a kid growing up.
But those smaller dancing images are horrendous. Julie's skirt twirling up to reveal bare legs and high heels?
Good god.
If it were released in the '80s, they probably would have had her with spiked hair and shoulder pads. It's pretty awful, and has nothing to do with the look of the movie. A reflection of its time, but a bad one.
The dancing Mary/Bert look like something out of West Side Story.
One thing about musicals of the '60s: they almost always had a rooftop number.
Even Julie's head on the original poster has nothing to do with how she looks in the film. It's her Maria Von Trapp hair! Watched this Blu-ray, yesterday. So happy with it. Julie deserved the Oscar just for being so friggin' beautiful in this movie.
I haven't bought it yet. Because I'm too cheap, and $24.99 is too expensive. Bastards. But I'll catch it on a sale one day.
My favorite thing about Julie's performance is that she plays against every expected emotion. That's what is so wonderful (and mysterious) about her Mary Poppins.
When everything is crazy and chaotic, she is cool as a cucumber. When people are having a nice time, she's pissed. She is amused when everyone else is troubled. She is troubled when everyone else is amused. She is serious when everyone else is light, dismissive when everyone else is deep, and deep when everyone else is dismissive.
Brilliant.
^^ Yes!
Lucky, for me, I had $25.00 Best Buy Certificate, so it cost me a buck something.
Mine's cost me $0..because I have friends at Disney.
The Mary Poppins Blu Ray release is EVERYTHING! What a joy! This is what one has big screen's and sound system's for. GLORIOUS. To me this movie has NEVER looked or sounded better. I have not dug into the extras just yet. It took me a while to get thru the movie because I kept re watching certain numbers. I can't believe I was kvetching about the price and trying to find the cheapest place to buy it. WORTH EVERY PENNY.
I got my copy of it last night and watched most of it today. It really does look incredible, I'm so happy with the restoration of this film. I haven't gone through the extras yet either, but I'm disappointed there's no commentary with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. When I heard of an anniversary edition of the film, it's the one thing I was praying would be on it. But the lack of any commentary at all is odd, nothing from Leonard Maltin, even.
@Jordan.. I believe there is a commentary with them. I have not gone thru it yet.. but when I click on audio options one of them is for their commentary.
I can't wait to get it ... but not for $24.99, bitch-bastards!
Sorry to hear there's no commentary! Julie did one (with Blake) for Victor/Victoria. It was recorded where I worked, and I snuck a peek at them both when they came in. They were so lovely to everyone (and I used to hear when people were rotten), and Julie enjoyed doing the commentary ... so it's not because she won't do one!
There IS Audio commentary with Julie Andrews, Karen Dotrice, and Dick Van Dyke.
REALLY?? It's not listed as being an extra! I'm going to put it back in right now!
Yeah, I saw it, but I still don't want to pay that much for it. And it will still be there when they drop the price in six months or a year.
So I guess I can wait. I'm obsessed with low prices on BDs. I have 1700 discs, so I justify my extravagance by counterbalancing it with thriftiness. If I compromise on that, all is lost.
Got it. I agree with you. But every once in a while there is something I have to have right away or I go nuts.
I just put the disc back in and don't see any commentary anywhere on it.
Hit the audio option or language option buttons.
Nevermind, I found it! You have to go into "classic extras" or whatever it's called. I guess it's an older commentary that they included. I just never knew they recorded one. Thanks, Dame!
Glad to be of help. Happy Friday!
Wow, best12bars, you were there when Julie and Blake did their V/V commentary? That one is a pure joy to listen to, sometimes I have trouble deciding whether I want to watch the movie without it!
