Yeah, that "God is clear in the Bible" argument always wins, doesn't it?

Of course, God is also clear about damnation from eating shellfish and sleeping alongside women whilst they're menstruating. I guess if you eat a clam roll on a daybed next to a gal with cramps, you're gonna spend two lifetimes in hell.

Oh, and don't forget cursing your parents. If you ever did that, hope you enjoy that choo-choo straight into a lake of fire with the rest of us, Goth!

"You're really gonna lead with the Old Testament? Really?"

I put that in for PJ's sake. One reference for the Jewish believers, one for the Christian believers.

In the world's religions, there is no precedent for gay marraige: Jewish, Christian, Islam, Hindu, Buddhism

Not to mention that taken literally (and we know how those Fundamentalists love to get literal when addressing homosexuals), there is no mention of the word "marriage" nor "wedding" nor "sanctioned" in either of those particular passages. It only says that a man should leave his parents and God will skin-graft him to a woman. And it certainly does not mention that gay marriage would make a mockery of God.

"And it certainly does not mention that gay marriage would make a mockery of God."

Please feel free to point to any religion that endorses gay marriage. Chapter and verse. If God wanted gay marriage, it would be in the Bible and wouldn't be a problem.

Well, there must a be a lot God doesn't want, pretty much anything the little peabrains who wrote it 2000 years couldn't anticipate, which is quite a bit.

The Bible doesn't make any mention of the internet, either. Shouldn't someone be awaiting the second coming?

Tell that to the pastors and ministers who have officiated gay weddings. Their response will probably only elaborate on mine: SO WHAT? Religion, like society, evolves and changes. Otherwise, there would only be one existing religion and Christianity would certinaly not be it. Even laws in the Bible are overturned from the old testament to the new.

Mine.

Once again, you make the assumption that your beliefs and interpretations are the only valid ones.

Research by the Yale historian John Boswell in the book, Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe, explores the historical context of homosexual marriages. His studies revealed that homosexual marriage rites have been legally sanctioned and religiously upheld for over 3,000 years in ancient African, Asian, Egyptian, Greek, Mesopotamian, Native American and Roman cultures. The social acceptance of same-gender relationships did not gain widespread condemnation until the 13th century, when religious orders stepped in and declared them immoral (Dorrell & Legal Marriage Court Cases, 1994,1996).

Paul Halsall, also a historian, supports the findings of Boswell and unearthed other cultures’ acceptance of male-male or female-female relationships. In his essay, Lesbian and Gay Marriage through History and Culture, he documents the recognition of same-gender couples in many cultures. He specifically lists, “Ancient Greece, Egypt, Crete, Sparta, Thebes, Ancient Rome, China, Japan, Malay, Bali, Australia, India, Native Americas (Chukchi, Koriaks, Kamchadale), New Mexico tribes, Peru, Brazil, Medieval Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism” (Halsall, 1996). While certainly the couplings and the recognitions were not everyday common occurrences, they were recorded as happening.

"If God wanted gay marriage, it would be in the Bible and wouldn't be a problem."

So...since polygamy is rampant throughout the Old Testament...does that mean that it should be sanctioned? After all Abraham had several wives as did King David...there's actually quite a list of men with multiple wives. And these men were held in high esteem by God. Or so the Bible says. So, can we count on you to vote yes on an amendment to allow polygamy when it comes up for a vote?

McCain's appearance on her show -- to suck up votes from the coveted Ellen fan base -- reveals once again the way Republicans will exploit those they legislate against as 2nd class citizens.

He needs her venue. He needs her popularity. And in return, she must deal with his "respectfully disagreeing" with the very core of her being. How about saying, "you're a wonderful American citizen and human being clearly of my equal or I wouldn't be sitting here." But no. He doesn't have to.

Instead, he gets to appear as a jokey "fun" kinda old dude, who can yak it up with a hip lesbo while still holding his sanctimonious higher ground.

All this religious stuff aside we live in a "free country." We are all equal and deserve equal rights. Anything short of that is discrimination.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - instead of fighting to legalize gay marriage, we should be fighting to have civil marriage eradicated. Society has outlived its usefulness. If people still want men in funny hats and dresses to tell that they are married, or even if they want to have a drag queen marry them before god, so be it. It should have nothing to do with civil society.

Goth, the Bible shows a gay marriage (though it does not have the language to call it thus). You should go re-read (or read, I don't know if you're educated on the Bible or not) 1 Samuel and the story of David and Jonathan. They performed a marriage ceremony without a doubt, and the Bible describes that in all its cultural detail within the cultural norms for that world.

By bracketing the story of David’s and Michal’s marriage (1 Sam 18:20-29a) between the two stories that introduce David’s and Jonathan’s marriagelike relationship (1 Sam 18:1-4 and 19:1-7)suggests that Jonathan is not only the structural equivalent of a wife to David, but a wife who supplants one of his sisters. In effect, Michal is “squeezed out” and her relationship becomes “parenthetical” (a minor insert) in the primary account of Jonathan’s and David’s love.

The Bible is really specific, indeed. Leviticus Chapter 20 Verse 13 says that men who lay with men as they would lay with women shall be put to death. Period. End quote. So those who really believe in the Bible must believe that gay men (gay women aren't mentioned) must be executed. Otherwise, they aren't pure true believers, and they'll be burning right with those of us who lie with our men like we would lay with women.

David and Jonathan. Funny how the gay names never change.

Yeah because we all know Ellen can make or break a POTUS election. The three people that watch her show weren't voting for McCain anyway.

"reveals once again the way Republicans will exploit those they legislate against as 2nd class citizens."

And how much legislating did Clinton do in eight years? "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and "DOMA" weren't signed by a Republican.
